The moaning of the rotten timber floors beneath my old leather boots was enough to send shivers down the ranch hands spine, I am the person who spooks the horses at night. Iam stuck in this old run down barn until my soul finds peace, then and only then will I be able to move into the afterlife, but there are times when god only gives you a certain time before he sends you to the locker.
Some of you are probably wondering how I died, and that story I will tell you shortly, every hour down to the last second of every day I am stuck in this barn like a bodystuck in a coffin. Every day I relive the memory of the day I died, the images are so vivid it is like it was happening all over again. Ihaven't aged a bit since that day no one should have to go through that torture I was too young to die I was only 18.
As for the story of how I died it was quite simple but I was not granted a quick death like others mine was a slow and painful one. I was killed in the great stampede of '96.Everything was going according to plan, but the sky grew dark as the grey and black clouds spread across the sky, the sound of the rumbling thunder and the cracking lightning was drawing closer. As we drove the heard of white face through Dead Man's Gully the rain camepelting down. The rain like ice cold needles into any exposed skin,my hands were shaky and numb from the chilling rain.
As we pushed on through the gully I felt as though something was not right, I heard a deafening growl to my left. I looked just in time to see an old mangy cougar jump from the rock face to the front of the herd scaring them back to me,causing my horse to rear high in the air dislodging me from my saddle. As the cattle grew closer I knew I would not make it throughthis alive, there was nothing I could do as I was crushed underneaththeir heavy hooves.
I was lying on the ground unmoving, alive but only just, the metallic taste of the blood filling my mouth. I could smell the fresh scent of the rain, and the dust kickedup by the herd that were now running for the safety of home. I could hear my soft uneven breath and the feeling of my heart slowing down abeat every second, all I could do was finally wait for it to stop. As my time as my time on earth came to a close I thought to myself what I had done to deserve this and then my heart stopped.
And that is the story of how I died and when I woke up I found myself in this barn it isn't too bad in the barn the floors are old but I have never minded about that and everytime I look out the window I can see the rolling green hills that I once called home with cattle grazing without a care in the world. The barn cat is a funny old creature with its black fur that is rough like metal shavings and for some strange reason it is traumatized of the mice and rats that scatter around on the barn floor. The horses from the lightest grey to the darkest brown run freely across the greenhills as if they are flying with their manes and tail flowing magesticlly in the summers wind.
Then suddenly I heard the shuffling of foot steps down and the panting of the old border collie Kip that the stable boy always has with him.
"there is someone up there I justknow it" I heard the stable boy stutter
"fine I'll go check"
I know that voice I swear I have heardit before but I just can't remember where, suddenly there was ablinding light and then I saw...
White fluffy clouds slowly drifting across the sky in a soft gentile motion, I was lying on my back on the hard rocky ground staring straight up at the bright blue sky. I have heard about this place before I am sure of it. I wondered around this place for what seemed like days, there was no exit I tried slapping myself and pinching myself but nothing would work.
Then it hit me I knew where I was and I did not like it one bit I was in the locker, the place where the man above sends you when he thinks you have had enough time to find piece but fail at finding it. There is no way out once you are sent here and the only way in is when he puts you here, they say that once you are in the locker you are doomed for eternity to wander this place.
With a long sigh I sat down on the ground knowing there is nothing I can do and looked around, the sky portrayed a lovely spring day and the air was crisp and fresh but the ground barren and made of sand and hard rock like the deserts in Egypt. The scene felt so real but I knew that it was just and illusion a torture, stuck in this place with nothing to do and nothing to see would surely drive me insane within the next couple of days if not that then a week. They say it is the second worst punishment and I don't even want to talk about the first. It looks like I am cursed to wander this place.
Cheers on being stuck here for eternity.
