Stopping at a large clearing with the rest of my packmates, I felt that something was amiss. Honing my hearing, I ignored the beating hearts and rhythmic breathing of my packmates, focusing on something further. A few hundred meters out, I hear multiple heartbeats. A few strays from the forrest animals, but there were multiple heartbeats in a big group. It has to be the Inebriabitur. Too focused on the sound of our neighbour, I didn't realise that papa had been trying to get my attention until he laced my name with an underlying Alpha Command.
"What is the matter with you, child! Your heartbeat was practically nonexistent! Don't scare your old man like that ever again, you hear?"
With a nod and an apology, I went told them of my findings.
"They are waiting. Watching us, probably from a higher land. A few hundred meters up, on a downwind. They've caught our scents. They know we are here. They want to see our reaction. It's a test. They are too far to hear us, but close enough to smell us. They are going to unsettle us by coming late, and approach us silently."
"How do you know this? If they're too far to hear us, I'll assume you also mean that we can't hear them. Them being in the updrift, we can't smell them"
"I am what I am, Damon. Trust me. Their objective is to probably unnerve us. They wants us to feel that we are at their mercy; that they are the predator, and we are prey. So let's not satisfy them. We'll keep calm, and we wait. Stay alert, and trust me."
When the stars disappear from the sky one by one, footsteps approached us. When the first member of the Inebriabitur appeared, we stood up, some of us shaking the leaves and dirt off our fur. Judging by their clenched jaws and wolfy expression, they are unamused.
My tail flicked behind me in annoyance. As the Inebriabitur gather, I started feeling fidgety. The more there are, the more I feel a sense of foreboding.
Then I see him. The Alpha of the Inebriabitur - Alpha Aidan Nichole. I have never expected him to look like he does. With hair as dark as night, and skin a rich tan. The sudden change in the wind direction brings their scents to us while their Alpha looks at each of my fellow packmates. when his eyes made contact with mine, I realise that they are the most beautiful, vivid blue I've ever seen, and I felt the undeniable pull towards him. I bowed my head in pretense submission, and closed my eyes to hide my eye colour bleeding through the contacts. When I feel him take a step forward, my head snaped up to him, eyes wide, no longer caring whether or not they can see the colour of my eyes. Trapped. I feel trapped. He's swallowing the distance between us with long, sure strides. Making a split second decision, I turned back and ran, away from my packmates, and away from him. The growl and the sound of pursuit begs me to sprint as fast as I could, but I can't. Not yet; there are too many witnesses - my speed will bring suspicion, unwanted attention and questions.
When I saw my chance, I seize it. The bushes thick enough to hide me, its brown leaves hanging on even with winter approaching. Once through the bush, I zig-zagged through trees and fallen logs. Once I'm sure I've lost him, I sprinted away, as fast as I could, stopping only when a pack of deranged red-eyed wolves caged me in their numbers, growling and snarling.
