Prologue
This is a recording of me Racsrhey Arenas. September 8, 2013. This thing that’s happening, it’s like from the movies. I can hardly believe it. One minute we were laughing and talking and next thing I knew people were running around screaming and pointing. I didn’t hear their moans. Or did I pay attention to their slow shuffle towards us. All I know is, what was happening didn’t really register in my mind until they were close. This is our story. I don’t know how many others survived but I know just how many friends and loved ones we lost. At first they look like normal people. But the eyes give them away. They don’t blink. They stare at you and you see that animal instinct to feed.
It was just like the movies. I never believed it would happen to us. I mean who would’ve thought college students would immediately have to fight for their lives and try to survive. We tried to help others but some were already dead. Not literally. But dead inside and dead to trust and the stuff that makes us human. We lost good people not only to what we now call the “Living Dead” but to people who kill just to survive. Those were the hardest parts. You’d think that humanity would band together and like we expect work together in times like these. But what we discovered was just horrible.
The next pages are in the words of my friend. We lost him and a lot more others in our last escape. Here let him tell you his story. Let him tell you how the end began.
Chapter 1
August 8, 2013
Oh God, what happened? Is this punishment for humanity? It was July 29, 2013. It started like any other Monday. I got up took a shower got my uniform on and got my stuff and put my camera in for some stolen shots. Who would’ve know I’d get stolen shots of them. I knew there was something else happening. I heard some of it on the news. A virus that made you want to eat human flesh. But of course who in the right mind would believe that right? How wrong I was.
So I said goodbye to my parents, I didn’t know it would the last time I saw them. I would have told them how much I loved them. I hope they’re alive. Man, I hope they aren’t living like us. I heard up near Pampangga they made the NLEX a fortress. Cause nobody uses cars anymore. Damn “others”, they’re everywhere in city’s especially places with really strong smells. Like, of course, Gasoline. I don’t know what it is about them they somehow have more heightened senses. I don’t think they can see I walk right past one of “them” the other day scavenging for supplies and it was like I wasn’t even there. Thank God it wasn’t one of the running ones.
Let me clear this up. The “others” as we refer to them aren’t really dead. But the virus, which isn’t airborn, just does stuff to you. I learned that the hard way when one of us got bit and we thought we could save him. He tried to bite me and I had to shoot him. I had to shoot my friend. Where ever you are Leonard, I’m sorry I’m so so sorry. But that’s for another page. It all started after our MLS class, everybody going their separate ways to eat lunch. But fortunately we had to have a meeting to talk about stuff for the upcoming Medtech week. That saved most of us. We were in the student plaza when all hell broke loose. People came running from the main gate screaming “TAKBO, DI SILA MAPIGILAN NG MGA GUARD”. But still we waited. I remember thinking “Is this an invasion by China?”. How stupid I was. So were just standing there all the other students running. That’s when I heard the moans. And like a thousand feet shuffling at the same time. You know how it is when you can’t believe what you’re seeing? Like things feel like you’re dreaming? That’s how I felt then just watching them coming towards us. I snapped to reality, fortunately and yanked Molly and said “Dude let’s get the fuck out of here”. I suggested we go to my house since there’s a gate and it’s a compound and we have a lot of makeshift weapons. And it was a good idea. But the hard part was getting there. Since, obviously there were a thousand infected in front of us. So we ran to the 5th floor of the MBA building to buy some time. Thankfully none of the “others” followed. There we met up with Block 1. I have no idea where the hell the teachers went. Call me selfish, But I was thinking we can’t bring this many people along. If they came along, it would just be too big a group to handle. I pulled Molly and MJ aside and told them what I thought. We nodded cause we knew what to do.
