"Miss? Are you awake?"

My eyes opened immediately as I gazed up at the woman standing over me. River's arm was still tightly wound around me, him still being blissfully asleep. Raider was curled in a ball by the food.

"Yes," I answered slowly. "Where am I?"

"Arlington," she told me as she helped me up. "Are you two from that storm?"

"Yeah." I kicked River awake quickly, and he sat up alertly. I helped him to his feet as well.

"I'm Julia Mitchell, and this is my friend River Underwood. From Wisconsin," I introduced.

"My name's Lily," the woman introduced herself. "There's been so many people drifting into here that I've been appointed the Greeter. I swear that our population's grown by one hundred people in the space of three days!" We laughed.

"It'll have two less. We're going to be drifting a little more once we relax for a couple days. Broaden our horizons a little," I explained.

"In the meantime, though, does Arlington have a decent diner?" River asked. "I'm starved and I think I might throw a tantrum if I don’t get a decent cup of coffee in the next fifteen minutes."

Lily nodded and pointed down Main Street, "Yup, Nan's, just down there. I live a couple houses away at three hundred, if you two need anything while you're here."

We thanked her, and she left to greet another young couple who had just drifted in.

River offered his arm to me, "Pardon me, ma'am, but would you go get some crappy restaurant coffee with me?"

"I'd be delighted to," I replied as we linked arms and walked down Main Street in the direction of Nan's.

I've read many miracle stories of how strange phenomenons change someone’s life forever. I always scoffed at them; I still do, to be honest with you, but at least I know there’s a hint of truth behind those stories. I also made a comment earlier about how cause and effect amazes me. Cause: Huge sci-fi like rainstorm. Effect: I fall in love with my cashier at the grocery store and travel with him in my floating house to Kansas.

It’s funny how these things work, isn't it?
