The Noise In the Dark

I whipped my head around, then slowly closed my eyes from the darkness to focus on listening. There it was again, that weird noise. It came from nowhere but everywhere at the same time. It wasn't very loud, it was the type of sound that, under normal circumstances, I wouldn't have even registered. But it was because of my time alone in the darkness that I noticed it. The loss of vision heightened all my other senses. I all of a sudden became very aware of my sweating palms, the sour taste in my mouth, the scent of lilys that filled my nose.. wait, what? My confusion was interrupted by the same noise, the same noise that sounded so familiar, but was yet, so unrecognisable.. I cautiously walked forwards, pausing every now and then, until..

"Saved by the bell!" Jamie laughed, packing his books into his bag, rapidly trying to get away from Biology as quickly as possible, before Miss Murlin could pull him back and demand he read out his answer to the homework he hadn't done. He never does homework, yet gets away with it, and always gets high grades, "Mary still hasn't caught me yet!"

I rolled my eyes at him and linked arms with Rose just as someone swished past us, 'accidentally' shoulder barging Rose's shoulder as they stormed out of the room. Emma McKenzie, the one who used to be nice. I wore a small frown as I remembered the good times Rose, Emma and I use to have together. To be perfectly honest I missed her, I missed our Emma, the girl who laughed more than she breathed, and was always full of compliments and smiles. I miss the way she use to be before Eric broke up with her.

Emma and Eric had always been close, but their friendship was nothing next to the relationship between Eric and Rose. After two years of being happy with eachother, Emma got bored, she told Rose and I how she was thinking more about Jamie than she was Eric, Rose was furious. Rose and Eric had the strongest friendship I had ever seen, and neither wanted anything more than just that, but Emma tried to cover her guilt from liking Jamie by accusing Eric of cheating, with Rose. Long story short, Emma hasn't spoken to any of us, particularly Rose, in over six months.

I sighed and turned on the spot when I heard Eric come running up the corridor behind us, "I've got a surprise for you lot," he smirked, with the look he has when he knows something you don't.

"Well, go on then, what is it?" Jamie asked, brushing his light brown hair back from his bright green eyes with his hand.

"Nope! You'll have to wait and see, but you're all gonna love me," he took in the sarcastic look on Rose's face, "I'm just sayin'.." Rose laughed and playfully punched him on the shoulder.

I turned around from my friends with the intention of continuing on to the canteen, when I saw him again.. He was leaning against the lockers, casually, with his arms folded loosely across his torso. I froze and Rose walked straight into me, and I found myself on the floor, infront of Jeremy Walker for the second time in under an hour..

"Here we go," Eric exhaled as he and Jamie lifted me off the floor, whilst Rose was doubled over in fits of laughter, "You should have seen your face!" and burst into another fit of giggles. I looked up red-faced to see if he witnessed my display of balance, but he was nowhere to be seen.

After struggling through lunch with playful remarks and references being made at random intervals by Jamie, Eric and Rose, "Have a nice trip, Emily?". I eventually made it to Music. I immediately relaxed when I walked into the room, the walls were a light shade of red, and the music department always had a good atmosphere. I noticed Darren in one corner of the room, his black, curly hair covering his green-tinged grey eyes, as he leaned over an acoustic guitar, he glanced up as I entered, gazed around the room and went back to his music, I was fairly sure he was composing something because he kept stopping to jot down notes. I spotted John across the room and took my place beside him when a jolt hit me, like an electricity-bolt to the heart. I mentally excused it as heartburn, when I was shocked again, and suddenly I was in the darkness again.

How had that happened? One minute I was walking towards where I thought the noise was coming from, the next I remember dreaming, and waking up on the floor, drenched in sweat. Had I fainted? Blacked out? Had I been attacked?

Would someone find me soon?
