The town was cramped, the tight alley I had hoped would lead me out of this hell hole had only lead me into the second half of the large unlawful market where all sorts of creeps snarled and spat at one another, buying illegal pets and drugs. Only, this second half belonged to the not so human people.
Here was where an Angel was more likely to be found. Not frolicking through a field of daisies or flying through blue skies like they did in most pictures.
No, the illegal dealers were most likely to be the Angels.
This was when I needed the thick cloak; to stay invisible as I passed through.
I wasn’t afraid to admit it, I was scared. Scrap that, I was terrified. My heart beat was thumping rapidly in my chest, I gasped as I desperately searched for a way out without looking suspicious or cowardly.
Angels can smell that.
They took the form of an attractive human but their true form was a little more than a hideous beast.
My journey to the bus stop wasn’t exactly the stress free type.
I scurried along, trying to fit into my surroundings as best as I could without being spotted or frowned upon by the creatures I bump into.
Hunching myself over, I took the shape of a crippled old lady who had taken the wrong turn and was trying to make her way out before she got lost. Or a thousand year old witch with a cold.
Angels can spot us from a mile away. We weren’t abnormally large or small, we didn’t have extra limbs or look any different to the humans; we didn’t even have a different breathing pattern from humans that Angels could pick up on; we looked and acted just like any other human. We smiled, we frowned, we laughed, we cried. Teenage Nephil like me slept in late, own vicious mood swings, and went against our parents commands.
All the Angels had to do was look at our eyes. Heck, even humans knew we were different when they took a single glance towards our eyes. Most commented on them, making adoring compliments, but some crossed the road when they noticed us quickly approaching. Normally the irises were an unusual colour that would not usually be found in the human eye; pupils thick and only slightly narrow like cats.
A man ahead stood tall and alert. Quietly examining me as I moved on, shrugging my cloak further over my burning ice-blue eyes. I had been stuck with the most luminous shade of blue which almost screamed ‘kill me!’ to passing Angels.
Unfortunately, in my haste to pull the cloak over my eyes, it slipped back down, uncovering my eyes for a split second. But a split second was all it took.
The Angel who stood behind the large crocodile meat store glared his pearly whites at me, revealing a mouth full of glistening white teeth in a monstrous grin.
Got ya’.
