"Peta!" My best friend Sharna calls from outside the open door of our apartment, "Ready yet?"
I check myself in the mirror one last time and then hustle out the door to where Sharna's standing on the pavement steps. We get into her car and she starts driving. We're going to our friend Alexandra's wedding in San Fransisco.
"Do I look okay?" I ask Sharna.
"You look great, babe." But Sharna, being my best friend, knows I'm worried.
"What's wrong, P?"
"I heard Maks is going to be at the wedding, and I'm a little nervous to see him since we just broke up."
"It'll all be fine, stick with me and you won't even have to look at the idiot."
I laugh. "Thanks."
We finally arrive at the church where Alexandra and her boyfriend Jake will wed. We find our reserved seats and settle in them.
Sharna and I are practically weeping as we watch Alexandra walk down the aisle, she looks so beautiful and we're so happy for her.
Once the wedding is over, we walk over to the hotel across the street where the reception will be.
Sharna and I are at Table 6, and as we find it I'm treated to an unpleasant surprise.
Maks is across from my seat.
"Peta, Sharna, nice to see you guys!" Maks says, hugging us. We exchange hugs with Val, Allison, Cheryl, Tony, and Derek next, who are also at our table.
After about five minutes of small talk and awkwardness between Maks and I, a waiter comes to our table and takes our order.
"Would you like to order for your lady?" the waiter asks Maks when he's finished ordering, gesturing to me.
"Oh, actually, she's not my lady." Maks tells the waiter.
"Oh! I'm so sorry, I shouldn't have made that assumption," the waiter, says, obviously shocked, "I'm sorry, ma'am."
"It's okay." I assure him, in spite of my face growing redder and redder by the second.
Awkwardest. Thing. Ever.
The reception goes by quickly, and I find myself having fun, until Alexandra finishes her dance with her dad.
"We actually have some professional ballroom dancers here tonight," she says, "Sharna, Peta, Maks, Val, Allison, Cheryl, and Derek, would you guys mind showing the rest of us some of your moves?"
"Sure!" we reply.
Sharna goes with Derek, Allison with Val, and Cheryl with Tony, leaving only Maks and I.
Oh no.
Maks walks over to me. "Peta, would you like to dance with me?"
I reluctantly say yes and take his hand.
The DJ puts on some salsa music and we start dancing. I get into it, pretending Maks is someone else. Before I know it, the other pros have stopped dancing and everyone is crowded around us. I immediately withdraw from Maks, embarrassed.
"Peta?" he says, disappointed I stopped dancing with him.
"What?" I ask, uninterested.
"What we just had there is a chemistry I've had with no other woman. I don't want to make this too long, so I'm just gonna say it- I was stupid to break up with you. Will you be my girlfriend again?"
Maks looks so sincere, with those adorable light brown eyes and that nervous but cute smile. I never wanted to break up with him, he dumped me. I realize I've always loved him.
"Yes! Yes I will!" I exclaim. Maks pulls me into a hug and spins me around.
"I will never let you go." he whispers into my ear.
And that's all I need to hear.
