Long after I black out, something hard taps my face. I awake from unconsciousness and gasp for air, my lungs and throat burning. The pain is unbearable.
After a few minutes, I can lift my head off the ground. I sit up and realize that I was laying on hard concrete. Where am I?
Fear and pain shoot up through me as I realize that someone must have pulled me out of the water. I lost consciousness, there's no way I could've pulled myself out.
I turn my head and see a pair of light green eyes staring suspiciously at me. I jump up and face the stranger, seeing their eyes turn a darker shade of green.
Standing makes me nauseous, but I have to escape. I turn and run, but the stranger grabs my arm and pulls me back to them. I thrash and try to claw my way out of his grasp, but he just stands there, holding me.
"No. Please. I'm not going to hurt you. I promise." He says, and I fully realize that he is a man, no older than 23. I look into his eyes again, seeing sincerity and curiosity. Did he know what I was?
Curiosity of my own takes over, and I can't control it. A piece of dirty blonde hair falls in his eyes and he wipes it away, taking his hands off my arm.
"Who are you?" I ask, and he looks from behind his hand at me. "I think I should be asking you the same thing. How are you even still alive?" He asks, and he turns to look around to see if anyone else is here. "Are you alone, or are there more of you?"
"Why should I answer any of your questions?" I say, and he looks slightly amused, a smile forming on his lips. "You're just the nicest, aren't you?" He asks, and before I can help it, I burst into laughter.
"Under these circumstances, you're really worried about me being nice?" I cry, still laughing. He stopped chuckling and stared at me, confused.
"What circumstances?"
"This."
"What's this?"
"I'm not sure. But after I figure it out, I'll let you know." And it start to walk away again, noticing that my clothes are completely drenched, as is my bag. He jogs up to me and places a hand on my arm. "Where are you going? You really think that I'm going to let the only female I've come in contact with in almost a year, just leave?" He looked incredulous.
"I have places to be. People to save." And I try to walk away yet again. This time he stops me. "You can be the cure to humanity. Don't you want to save what's left?" I stopped to consider this, running my tongue over my teeth.
"You really want to talk about saving humanity with me? You don't even know my name." He looked at me and I sware I could've seen something in his eyes. They were blue now.
"I tell you what. Why don't we just make camp here for the night, get to know each other, and I can help you get wherever you're going." He said smiling. I debated whether I wanted someone- especially a man- to go with me. But he looked friendly, and I didn't know the area, not like he did.
I would lose more going alone than I would gain."I did save your life you know." He adds. I raise my eyebrows and look at him, at his pronounced jawline and his slim and masculine body. At his changing eyes filled with sincerity, and at his clenched hands. He was waiting on a answer. I sighed.
"Fine. But only if you take care of me. I can't risk falling into another ravine."
"Always." He says, and leads me into a crumbling building, just as dawn breaks, smiling the whole way.
