Breathless

Prolog

          "Daddy! Shift! I wanna see Mark! Come on! Pweese!" I whined to my father as I pulled him into the woods so we could go for a run. I had my tiny hands wrapped around his wrist and he was laughing at my childishness.

          "Okay, okay fine" He laughed and raised his hands in surrender. "Only because its your birthday and Mark wants to go on a run with this big seven year old." He laughed again and he pointed to my little fraim. "He says he thinks your a big girl now!" He laughed harder and I slapped his arm.

          "I'm not a big girl yet daddy!" I yell so he can hear me over his laughing. " I won't be a big girl until I can shift into my wolfy." I said and started laughing at him as he held his arm, as if I had actually hurt him.

          "Are you sure? You hit harder then your mother does." He said with a fake pained expression on his face.

          I laughed at him and couldn't help but fall on my butt and laugh harder. "Daddy you silly!" I said between laughs. I was smiling so big I had to keep my eyes closed so that tears didn't start falling. I hadn't noticed he shifted until his wolf Mark started jumping on my and licking my face, making me laught harder. "Daddy , Mark Stop!" I said between laughs.

          Mark hopped off and layed down in the bright medow we were in. I looked at him and got up, walked over to him and put my leg over his back. "Giddy-up wolfie!" I said and started laughing as he stood up and began running through the woods behind our house.

          I watched as the trees went by. All their amazing colors making them look even more beautiful. I loved the way the forest smelt. Like fresh rain and dirt. I couldnt believe that one day I'll get to grow up and be able to run through the woods and be in my wolf form.

          I hadn't noticed we'd stopped moving until Mark's loud growl pulled me out of my daze. I looked up to see three big wolves standing about ten feet in front of us. "Daddy, who are they?" I asked curiously. "They smell funny." There was one wolf that stood out the most, and it was the one in the middle. He was all black with red eyes and teeth the size of raven tallons. I felt a rush of fear go through my body as Mark started to bare his teeth at the other wolves. They were rogues.

          "Baby, I need you to run. Run and go get mommy and then take your brother and hide. There are more then these three here. I need you to run and don't stop until you get to mommy. Alright honey?" I could feel the urgency in his voice as he layed down so I could get off his back. He never took his eyes off the wolves. I couldn't mind link him back and I was to afraid to speek. So once I was off his back I turned and ran. I ran like my life depended on it . . . and it did."

         I could hear the wolves fighting behind me, but the noice went away as quick as it came. I was fighting the urge to look back but I ended up turning around to see what was happening. That was the biggest mistake I ever made. The big black wolf that was standing with the other two was running up behind me and catching up fast. I pushed for my legs to go faster but tripped over  a tree root falling to the ground and hit my head on a rock. The pain coursing though my head was to much for me to handle. My breathing sarted getting fast beacsue of the moster that was following me.

          "Awe did the little baby fall." The wolf said as he walked up to me. He stood above me staring at me like a meal that he couldn't wait to dig into. "Poor thing. You must hurt really really bad. I wish I could just end it all for you, but not just yet. I have to spare you this time." He said with a sinister grin across his face. His wolf was inches from my face, but my eyes couldn't stay open. I started fading into blackness, but not before he got his last words in. "We will meet again little one and your last breath will be drawn the moment we come face to face." I faded into the dark abyss of a dreamless sleep.
