Prologue
It happened again. The dream, the nightmare, it's always so real. There he was, there I was. It was so surreal, almost like it had been before he was torn from my grip.
"Mitch," he said. His lips formed the words," I love you," but no words escaped.
His smile, his happiness, was my reason for living. That beautiful mouth I had longed for pressed firmly against mine. He tasted organic, like he was part of the earth that kept me grounded.
He pulled away and looked me in the eyes. There was only pain and sadness. "Asher, my dear, what's wrong?" He stared at me with such a hurt expression, that it ripped my heart out. "It's all your fault. You could have stopped this."
Asher fell limp in my arms as blood poured from his mouth, nose, and eyes. "Asher!" I yelled. "No!"
I awoke with sweat pouring down my face. My skin burned, and I couldn't breathe.
"Asher," I whispered under my breath. He was right. It was all my fault that he died. I could have stopped it all. But I hadn't. And now I had lost the only thing that I had ever truly loved.
