Chapter 27 Part 1/2 – Long Live The King

Song of The Chapter: The A Team by Ed Sheeran

"You look really nice."

My eyes turned to my door. Dad was standing by the frame.

His hair was bushy brown, which means he must've just woken up. Leave it to him to wake up at 7:pm at night. He was smiling, but his lips kept together. It was even on both sides, just like he always smiled.

"Thanks," I grumbled and yanked at my tie "I'm going to kill someone if this tie doesn't behave."

He mumbled a laugh. It sounded like it came from his stomach. "You look all grown up," he said. His voice sounded weird. I couldn't pinpoint why.

I turned back to my mirror that I was standing in front of. "You can come in, you know."

"I'd rather stay here," he said.

I looked at him. He was leaning against the door frame. "You're starting to creep me out Dad. It's only Prom, I'm not getting married."

He chuckled. "I know. I know." He huffed. "But I'm not here to see you do any of this stuff." He paused. "That saddens me."

I nodded, absently. I caught myself staring off into space as I did so. I refocused my eyes on him. "So what? This...is a dream?"

He shrugged. "I'm here aren't I?"

"Figures...."

"I'm proud of you kiddo," he said. "Of you and your sister."

I smiled. Just a little. I was having a lucid dream. The guy would say what my brain wanted him to. But, that didn't mean that I didn't wish it was actually him. He looked the same. His hair was still chocolate brown. His eyes still were amazingly blue. He was still tall; taller than I may ever be.

He looked so much better without any tubes in him.

"I'm proud of me too," I replied.

He smiled. I did too. Then I heard Evelyn's voice very faintly in the back of my head. Dad frowned. "You're waking up."

Evelyn's voice got a bit louder in my head; a tad bit clearer. The room we were in shook like an aftershock. Things fell off of the stand next to the door. The light bulb went out, but the room still remained bright. Dad did not move. He did not look scared. So, I remained calmed as well.

"I love you, Evan."

"And I love you," I answered. Without any form of hesitation. Not thinking that this was a –

"Wake up, you fruitcake!"

My eyes snapped open. Evelyn was shaking me. "Do you know how long it took to get your hair stand up like that?!"
