Thom was enraged, "How can you just sit there, when he is stuck with them?" Thom and Jack sit in a darkened room on the 24th floor of the Magistrate Hotel. Jack had called Thom to an emergency meeting 5 minutes earlier.
"He knew this day would come sooner or later." Jack said, suspiciously calm. He leans back in his chair, obviously not that worried. They were both in a conference room, sitting on the same side of a long, rectangular table. One side of the room was eerily bare with no decor of any kind, while the other had a slender window running down the whole entire length of the room, showing the world outside. The distinct smell of disinfectant polluted the air around them.
"Even if he is the strongest agent we have, he will eventually run out of endurance, he will give in and answer their questions. Then he'll tell them everything." Thom , who was getting angrier by the second, spat out. He stood up and starting pacing. He knew their friend was by far the best, but he was also being contained in the best prison ever known to man.
"He will not say a word." Jack stated with authority, while glaring at his long time friend.
"How can you be so sure? If he makes one wrong move, one sentence mumbled in his sleep, everything we've all worked for goes down the drain." Thoms' Rage starts to wane as he thinks of the agent and friend.
"I know because he won't be in there long enough for that time to come," Jack says calmly.
"Oh sure, and I suppose that he is just going to ask them if he can leave and they'll just let him walk right on outside, eh?" Thom retorts, words laced with sarcasm.
"Of course not. Don't be ridiculous," Jack answered, not impressed.
"Oh, sure, now I'm the one being ridiculous," Thom mutters, rolling his eyes.
"We are going to free him," Jack simply states.
"Exactly how long ago did you lose your mind? Was it just this morning or has it been this way for a while?" Thom asks innocently. He's reminded that he tends to turn to sarcasm when he's stressed out, right then for example.
Jack was staring out the window, but at this, he turned back to glare at his friend. "It's not an impossible task and you know it," Jack argued, now feeling defensive.
"Maybe not, but it's as close as you can get. I suppose now you're going to tell me that we're the ones who are going to walk up to the most heavily guarded prison in the world and ask them to release their most prized prisoner. I am sure they will be happy to oblige, maybe they'll even give us some cookies for the road." Thom says, once again turning to sarcasm.
"Sometimes I wonder how we ever became friends. We obviously aren't going to just walk straight up to them, we'll-"
"Of course not, that would be ridiculous." Thom cuts in.
"Will you let me finish! I was only stating the obvious because some of us, apparently, don't completely understand." Jack looks pointedly at Thom. "We are not going to save him, you are. You will have to find a way to enter in through the tunnels."
"Oh no you don't. You promised that I would never have to go through those turbid tunnels again. How many times are going to make me risk my life for you?" Thom's anger is starting to rise again.
"Oh stop whining, will you? You're still alive aren't you?" Jack countered, starting to lose his patience.
"Depends on what your definition of alive is." Thom mumbles under his breath.
"Anyway, there is no other way but this one. Are you going to sacrifice his life just because of you're going to have to face some of your fears?" Jack demands, pretending he didn't hear Thoms earlier comment.
"Don't turn this around on me! Just last month you were begging me to not go into the tunnels and now, here you are telling me I have to go in them again. You should be the one going in to rescue him. You are as much to blame as I am for his situation! Of course, I know that you wouldn't last 15 seconds in there, but it's what you deserve." Thom states going into offensive mode.
"Will you or will you not go save your friend in need?" Jack asks exasperated.
"Of course I will go, but don't think for a second that I'm doing this for you! I am doing this because he sacrificed everything, even his life, for me. I owe him." Thom starts loud, but ends quietly.
