Vivian Albertine

I was sitting on my bed, reading my book in complete silence. My dog was laying next to me as I slept and the only sound hear was her breathing and the turning of the pages in my book. Right before I turned the page, my door opened and my dad walked in, causing my dog Rosie to lift her head and look at him. My dad sat at the foot of my bed as Rosie laid her head back down.

"I have to tell you something," my dad signed. A worried expression was etched in his features.

"Alright, shoot," I tell him. He nods and gets comfortable before he begins speaking.

"Your aunt called and said that Berto was sick. I know it's sudden, but I told her we'd move down there and help out," he signs. Berto was my older cousin by two years.

I let it process before replying, "um, yeah I guess it's fine. When are we moving?"

"We'll leave as soon as we get everything packed up," he tells me. I nod my head and after sitting there my dad got up and left, leaving me with my thoughts and Rosie.

Over the next few weeks I helped my dad pack things. Our hous became emptier and emptier as time went out. The walls were bare and we didn't have any furniture, except for our beds of course.

It was now Sunday and we left the next day. I made my way to the shower, but stopped when I saw my moms sanctuary. My dad told me that my mom would always go in there to do yoga and listen to music.

I walked towards the door and placed my Hanson the cold knob. I slowly turned it and walked in. There were some boxes on the floor along with a yoga mat and some weights. There was a desk to the side with paper and pencils on it. There was a black case laying on the floor that looked like it held an instrument.

I walked towards it then bent down and unzipped it. Inside was a beautiful Ukulele with a note placed atop of it. I picked up the note and unfolded it, reading the neat cursive handwriting.

       Vivian,
This was my Ukulele, even though I didn't properly learn how to play. It should be in my sanctuary, along with my favorite CDs, pictures and a small box in the top drawer of my desk.
I'm sorry we had to 'meet' this way. The doctor came in just recently and told me that you had woken up but you're deaf. I never meant for any of this to happen cariño, you just looked so beatufil with you face all lit up as you looked at your first lost tooth. Just because I looked back at you for a split second, I changed our lives forever. I'm so sorry cariño.
I'm sure you won't be learning español for a while but someday you will, but for now just know that cariño means honey and that I love you. I also know you can't listen to the music I'm giving you but if you ask you dad he'll tell you all about it. Anyway, I've got to go. I love you so much cariño, I'll see you later, even though I'm watching over you at all times.
                            Love, mom

After reading that letter I had tears escaping my eyes. I put the letter back in the Ukulele case, zipped it up, then walked to her desk. I opened the top drawer and saw the small black box she was talking about.

I grabbed it and opened it, coming face to face with another letter and light blue beaded necklace with a golden moon crescent that had 'I love you to the moon in back' written on the front then it said the same thing on the back but in español. I grabbed the letter and read it.

      Vivian,
With the necklace it will remind you that I'm always with you and will love you forever. I'll miss you cariño and I love you.
                            Love, mom

I quickly put the necklace on then grabbed the Ukulele, picture box and the box with her CDs and walked back to my room. I taped them up, placed them by some other boxes, then showered and went to bed.

The next morning my dad woke me up. After dressing, I walked downstairs then made my way out to the car. We had shipped everything beforehand and now all we had to do was fly out there. I carried a crossover purse that had my book, charger, gum and some lady essentials.

After a thirty minute car ride we finally made it to the airport. I was nervous for I've never been outside me small town in Rhode Island. After going through the long checking process, we walked to our gate and waited for about an hour and a half. While waiting my dad and I ate Kripsy Kreme donuts.

Finally, our flight was called and we boarded the plane. I got window seat and just rest my arm on the armrest and placed my head on my hand.

New Jersey here we come, I think as my eyes close and I fall asleep.
