It was late at night and the palace was void of any life. I had stayed in the kitchens longer than I normally did. I had finished up in there while the maids all went to bed, mostly because they were going to collapse any minute if I hadn't told them to go to bed.
I shivered as the cold sunk into my bones, creating goosebumps on my skin. Sure, summers were warm, but the nights did get very cold. I was walking towards my room when I heard whispering. I sighed, not wanting to know who it was. As I turned the corner, my assumptions were correct.
Terrence and one of the guards were whispering and talking to each other. Terrence glared at me as I walked by and I glared at him as well.
oOo
I woke up to something wet and slobbery licking my face. It barked and my eyes opened immediately. Daisy, one of my fathers hunting dogs had gotten into my room and woken me up.
"Daisy, how did you get in here?" Despite my shock, I pet her silky ears and rubbed her belly. She was smiling her goofy smile with her tongue sticking out.
Someone knocked and I told them to come in. It was Karen, and she had breakfast for me. "Your mother and father left with King James and Queen Louise for a short ride. They won't be back for a couple of hours."
I moaned and flopped on my bed. Daisy stood up and started licking my ear. "Why couldn't they bring Terrence? There could've been a possibility of him being killed on the way back."
Karen laughed and set the food on the table with a smile. "If you need anything else dear, just let us know."
I smiled at her. "Thanks Karen." I sat up, and stretched. Daisy barked and jumped off of the bed and onto the floor. I got changed into a simple plain dress and began to eat. When I finished, I exited my room cautiously as to make sure that Terrence wasn't around. Daisy had a different plan. She ran underneath me, as I was leaving my room making me trip. I braced myself to fall. When I didn't feel the floor beneath me, I opened my eyes and found myself staring at the floor, hovering. I was pulled and collided with someone's chest.
I turned around and found Terrence smirking like the little devil he is. His hands were still on my waist.
"Good morning Princess." He still had that stupid smirk on his face.
I frowned and removed his hands from my waist. "Thank you for catching me. Now if you'll excuse me," I turned to walk away, but he grabbed my wrist, pulling me back to him.
"Now, now, we have the whole palace to ourselves and your the only one I can spend time with seeing as our lovely parents abandoned us."
I narrowed my eyes and looked at him suspiciously. "This better not be some sort of trick."
Terrence scoffed. "Of course not. I may not like you, but we sure better start getting along if we are going to be marrying each other." He looked at me his eyes roving up and down with that stupid smirk plastered to his face. "Although, marrying you won't be that bad. Your looks have certainly gotten better, I don't know about your attitude though."
I frowned. "Marrying you is more of a death wish then anything right now."
Terrence rolled his eyes. "Princess, you're lucky your beautiful."
Ignoring the compliment, I removed his hands from me and glared at him. "I told you to leave me alone."
He tapped his chin with his finger. "Did you say that now? I don't have a good memory."
I wanted to slap that teasing and annoying grin off of his face. "You're unbearable." As I walked away, I heard him chuckle.
I walked into the stables, pretty aggravated. I hate him. I hate him. I hate him. I hate him. His stupid face and his stupid arrogance and pride. His eyes had told a complete different story then his words. It made me think that he had actually wanted to get along for a change, when he said that we should get along. But I was stupid to believe that for even a minute.
I sat down on a stack of hay and pulled my knees to my chest, these thoughts swirling in my mind. I put my head down and looked up when I felt something sit next to me. Daisy looked at me and whined putting her head on my hands. She licked my hand and whined again. I smiled slightly and played with her ears. "Why don't we go inside the forest girl?" She perked up and her tail started wagging. I laughed and followed her as she took off.
We strolled through the forest, the sun shining high in the sky. The birds chirped and I sighed, breathing in the smell of the trees and the earth. We were following the trail when Daisy stopped and stood still staring straight ahead. I looked at where she was looking. I only saw the brush, so I walked forward to catch a glimpse.
Daisy whined as if to tell me not to go forward. I frowned and moved the brush away. "Daisy nothing's there." She whined and crept forward. She growled when something whizzed by. It hit a tree with a 'thunk' then I realised it was a spike. The tree turned brown and cripple into nothing. If that spike had hit me, I would be dead.
I stepped back, my eyes wide and Daisy started barking louder. A large basilisk jumped from the trees and toward the both of us. Daisy circled me growling at it when it tried to come near me.
My heart was pounding and my mouth was dry. I couldn't talk and it was hard to breath. Then I realised that birds had stopped chirping and the whole forest was silent. The basilisk surged forward and I jumped out of the way landing on my back. It shrieked, it's shrill voice hurting my ears.
I didn't like the way it was looking at me, like I was its next lunch. It tried to look at my eyes to turn me to stone, but I looked at its neck. I clenched my fists to try and stop my hands from shaking so much. It was so silent you could hear a pin drop.
I gulped and tried to think of something. The basilisk stepped forward, and that's when Daisy lunged. She bit the creature on its underbelly not letting it go. The giant snake screeched and roared, making the whole forest vibrate. I took this as my chance and tried to run away.
It sighted me escaping and caught me with its tail. I felt the spikes tear at my clothes. This was bad, if it's poison mixed with my blood I would be done for.
