Tzzz. The cigarette made the familiar sound of being lit. Taking a long drag of the toxic stick, feeling the smoke smother my lungs and then breathing it out. Watching the dark gray clouds I just breathed out go away with the wind.
Knock knock. "Nevy, are you in there?" I heard my seven year old sister, Venessa, call from the other side of the door. "Yeah, what do you need?" I called from ledge I was sitting on. "Can I come in? Mom's yelling at Robert again. I really don't wanna listen to it. It's hurting my ears."
I quickly get up from the ledge. Watching my footing as I climb back into the window. "Coming Nessa just wait a second." I spray some random perfume I find on my dressed through my room to get red of the cigarette smell so Venessa doesn't smell it again.
Putting the smell good down I walk over to the door unlocking it. "Come in Nessa." Walking past me she sniffs air questioningly. "Where you smoking those cancer things again? Nevy you know smoking only one takes a day off your life? I learned that in health class!" Shs says starting to get worked up.
"Yeah I know." I shrug. "Then why do you smoke them?" She gets frustrated about it. "You wouldn't understand why Venessa. Maybe when you're older."
"I am older! I'm almost eight!" She exaggerates holding up right fingers.
"Older than eight. Maybe when you're around 12." I say walking past her to the bed. Sitting down she follows behind me copying my actions.
"Can we watch a movie? Momma says I can't watch television in the living room anymore. She won't tell me why though." Shs frowns at the thought.
"Yeah, what do you want to watch?"
"Can we watch Care Bares? Momma won't watch it with me anymore." Shs gives me the puppy dog eyes. Probably because she knows I despise Care Bares.
"Uh, sure. Grab the remote." I point to the TV stand where the remote lays. She hurries to get it for me and brings it back.
"Are you ready for school tomorrow?" I ask Nessa as I scroll through Hulu to get to the kids section.
"Not really. I'm scared the kids are gonna be mean to me, because of how I am." I scrunch my eyebrows up at that.
"What do you mean?" She looks away as she says, "The other girls pick on me because I wear glasses and the boys pick on me because my grades are higher than their's. I don't get it Nevy. Momma gets mad at me. The kids don't like me. Is there something wrong with me? Should I be dumb or something?"
I scowl at that. Society has gotten so bad seven year old are stressing about other kids messing with them. And parents always being mad at their kids and shit. That doesn't help. What the hell is wrong with earth?
"No Nessa. There's nothing wrong with you. Mom is always mad because she's not happy with herself and the other kids are mean just because... Well they're jealous. Yeah, they're just jealous of your intelligence and are mad because they don't look good in glasses and you do." I say the last part with a giggle pushing Vanessa's glasses up the bridge of her nose.
Shs giggled too. "I guess you're right Nevy. Thanks for the talk...now on to Care Bares."
We ended up watching Care Bares until we fell asleep. Only to be awoken with banging on my room door.
