The wave revealed that my legs were covered in a shining deep blueish-green glow and there were tining blueish-green bubbles popping all over my legs. Then, starting from my hips and spreading down towards my feet, the glowing got birghter and began to sparkle. As the sparking proceeded down my legs, the skirt piece of my light blue lace dress vanished, leaving my dress as a shirt that came down to my hips.
But the sparkles didn't stop there. Wrapping their way around my legs and down towards my feet. Peter was staring, open mouthed and completely awake. I understood why.
As the sparkles wound around the bare skin, they uncovered a scaley skin that looked like the side of a tuna. They were blueish-green, just like the sparkles, and made the nerve endings in my legs rev into overdrive. The glistening sensation intensified with every new scale, overwhelming my body so much my fingertips began to shake. The waves had stopped crashing on the rock and it sounded like the ocean had stopped churning altogether.
As the sparkled reached my feet, I braced myself for what I thought I was about to see. I what should have been my feet flick out into a "V" and watched as the sparkles and bubbles spread out into an enomrous fin, probably five feet in...wingspand? Fin-spand? And almost two and a half feet extending away from the scales where my ankles should have been. The bubbles faded and left behind a tail that looked like it had just come out of my childhood daydreams. Peter was a kid who dreamed of trains and astronauts, but I had a feeling he knew what a creature with a human upper half and fish bottom half was.
The blue-green scales shined in the moonlight and cascaded down to a fin rimmed with sparkles of every color. The sparkles reached out towards the bottom edge of the fin and the light of the moon reflecting off of the scaly surface extended far beyond my legs - I mean, tail. I reached out and touched the thigh area of the tail. To my fingers it felt like fish scales, but my bottom have didn't react to the touch.
"This is a dream. This has to be a dream." Peter was in just a much shocked as I was. "The girl I like can NOT be a MERMAID!"
Did he just say 'The girl I like'?
I had no time to think about that now. Peter looked like he could punch his fist through a rock or get up and bolt at any second, but he couldn't leave. Not now. He needed to be here. For me.
"Peter, I think it's real. Feel it" I anticipated him to run, but he didn't. Instead his face calmed and reached out towards the single knee joint. He ran his hand over the scales for three seconds before a light spread across the tail, but it wasn't just over the scales it was through it. I felt the tingly shock spread through my whole body. It warmed my heart, almost filling the spot that had been empty for months. The light faded as soon as it came, along with the interior lightning.
Peter reached out a second time and the light spread immediately and the lightning errupted even faster. The feeling lingered a little longer after the actual light faded.
Now, more for reassurance than out of curiousity, Peter reached forward for a third time and barely grazed my tail before light spread over me, through me, and out of me. My tail errupted with light shining brighter and the rays reaching further than when the tail had first appeared. The sensation took over my whole being and actually made my eyes close, my spine straighten, and my head tilt back slightly. It lasted only a few seconds before the rays began to be, what seemed like, pulled back towards my tail. Only after the scales absorbed the last of the light, they weren't scales anymore. It was my skin. Peter's third touch had brought my legs back.
It started at my hips, just like begining and wound its way down, revealing the skirt of my dress and my knees caps just below it. When my feet and ankles materialized, it seemed like nothing had changed, except my toe nails.
They were painted the same blueish-green color as my scales. But my toes hadn't been painted before, because I wasn't the kind of girl who painted her nails on a daily basis. But there it was, blue and green and new, as if I had just got them professionally done. It was a shame my toe nail polish wasn't the strangest thing that had happened tonight.
"The girl I like is a mermaid!" Peter's head pitched back and he blacked out.
