Chapter One
"And then I hit him", Kaylin smirked at me from over the cherry-red Mustang, slamming the door as I chuckled, walking by her side towards the orange brick high school.
Grinning slyly, I joked, "I always knew you'd be a wife beater, Daniels."
She batted her eyelashes innocently at me, sliding her keys into her small Chanel handbag. It was no secret that the Daniels household had money. It was also pretty well known that Kaylin wasn't at all afraid to go after what she wanted and flaunt what she already had. It didn't make her a bad person because she just truly wasn't one. In reality, she cared more fiercely than anyone that I had ever met.
"If he doesn't like it, he sure doesn't complain", she shrugged, flipping her strawberry blonde hair over her shoulder. "Right, babe?"
Dawson's face was twisted into a frown as he approached us, pressing a quick kiss onto Kaylin's forehead and nodding at me. I raised my eyebrows.
"What happened?" Kaylin questioned, sliding beneath her boyfriend's arm.
He spit his dip into an empty gatorade bottle before answering, "Just Williams being a little bitch as always. We got a new linebacker- knocked Williams on his ass about five times in a row. He threw a fit about it, cussed at Coach, and we all had to run suicides for the rest of practice."
Early morning football practice- that explained the sheen of sweat across Dawson's tanned forehead. Admittedly, I hadn't been paying much attention. It seemed to me that Dawson stayed mad at something most of the time, however the mention of a new linebacker peaked my interest. Things had been getting pretty bleak around here.
Kaylin snorted, "Must be a pretty big dude if he put Josh on the ground. The kid weighs like three hundred pounds." I laughed my agreement.
We sat down at our usual table in the crowded cafeteria, quickly being joined by a few of Dawson's teammates, but I had yet to see this new linebacker. Kaylin and I quickly became immersed in our own conversation while the boys segued into stats for the oncoming game this Friday.
"Alright, out with it", my best friend commanded, her plump lips pursed into a frown. I raised my eyebrows in question and she shot me an exasperated look before smirking deviously. "You know what I'm talking about. How did things go with Connor on Saturday?"
Grimacing, I shook my head in response. "It's not gonna happen. He's a pig." She sighed in disappointment. Kaylin had been non-stop trying to set me up with Connor Watson since nearly a month before school started.
"He's also one of Dawson's best friends! We'd be the perfect power couples", she pouted in dismay. I rolled my eyes slightly. Her determination to hook me up with the biggest pervert on the entire Westgate football team was starting to become annoying.
"His personality is downright infuriating", I declared. Her mouth immediately opened to argue, but I shot her a final look. "Kaylin, I love you, but no."
The bell rang, and Kaylin smacked me on the butt as a goodbye before making her way to the gym for her P.E. class with Dawson hot on her tail. First period passed by rather uneventfully, and soon I was in second period English waiting for class to begin. Sighing disappointedly, I took notice that the seat next to me remained unoccupied. Cierra wasn't here today.
Cierra Lane was another good friend of mine. Her, Kaylin, and Johanna Ingle were the only girls that I was actually very close to here. Honestly, our group was pretty much perfectly put together. While Kaylin and I were best friends, so were Cierra and Johanna. They balanced each other out amazingly. Cierra was almost unnaturally sweet while Johanna was far more blunt and wild.
