Ewa and I are truly alone, but at least I have been able to keep my sister alive for a few months. We have been stealing potatoes from the kitchen, hiding them in my oversized dress and eating them raw, worms and dirt included.
Sometimes I wonder if my cousins are alive or if Ewa and I are the only ones left. Though the nazis usually left alone people they consider half Jews, a person with only one Jewish parent, like Ksenia and Czesława.
I now scrub pots until my hands are raw and nearly bleeding, the nazis want us to work faster and harder. I can only imagine what the women working outside are going through. My back is bruised from the guards clubbing me and other kitchen workers when we fall behind, there was one incident that was truly terrifying. My hands were red and slightly bleeding. My arms exhausted from lack of rest. 'Dear god, just let me rest for one minute', I silently begged. As I relaxed my arms slightly I heard someone bellow "You little shit!" The next thing I knew I was curled up in a ball on the floor, a club painfully striking my back. 'This is it,' I thought 'This is how I am going to die' But, to my surprise after kicking me a few times I thought I had heard him leave, but I was not sure. Suddenly I felt myself being hoisted to my feet by Gita another worker "Stupid girl," she hissed, "Get back to work or you will get us all sent to the gas chamber."
I needed a moment to catch my breath,
however Gita shoved me over to my work station,"Child don't just stand there like a damn fool, work!" She shouted.
Work. That's all anyone does here we'll work and die. Get up, work, eat, sleep, die. That is the life here.
