His thick Romanian accent drawled lazily across my ear, sickly sweet breath brushing against my hair. “Come on, princess… Just one… little… bite.”
Without missing a beat, the toe of my boot found a home in his crotch, causing him to double over in pain. I was disappointed to see that he didn’t sink to the ground but the well-placed kick had its desired effect.
Dead or not, kick a guy in the nuts and he’ll be hurting.
Feeling annoyed with myself for thinking he might be different, I pulled up my purse and school bag and headed out of the library. What an asshole, I thought bitterly, passing the janitor who was making his rounds, extinguishing the flaming torches on the walls. As I went, I could feel the chill creeping back into my skin as it always did when the fires went out.
Through the small windows, I could see the hint of sunrise in the distance. For a moment, I took pleasure in thinking that he might not be able to make it back to his dorm before the first rays made their appearance. It was a short lived feeling however as I remembered how fast he was; how fast they all were. Still, the thought was enough to coax a small smile out of me.
But I was destined to become disgusted again, and I quickened my pace, hoping to reach my room before I encountered any more of them. They were hard to avoid, but not entirely impossible. My living space was the only safe place for me here.
I took the long way back to my quarters once I reached the doors to the outside. The sun was coming up now so there wasn’t any reason for me to hurry. No one would be bothering me during this time. They couldn’t if they wanted to.
The chill autumn air sank into my bones as I sank down onto a damp bench, not really caring that my butt would get wet. My eyes squinted up towards the east, where the blessed sun was steadily making his appearance to the world.
I couldn’t look for too long though before I had to focus my attention on the ground. Living in almost perpetual darkness made my eyes pretty sensitive to any light that wasn’t from some kind of burning candle. Feeling the familiar twinge of annoyance again, I tried to empty my thoughts out.
Futile effort, really. I don’t know why I bother.
My relationship with Aurel hadn’t been all bad but, sure enough, like all the others, he could only control his blood lust for so long before it became too hard for him to handle. The toe of my boot still twinged a little from the kick it had delivered. I used the end of it to overturn a few pebbles on the ground before getting up and crossing the remainder of the courtyard to get to my dormitory.
With my door closed safely behind me, I made sure to lock the it tightly, so that it was safe and secure. It was a necessary precaution that I couldn’t avoid, kind of like having a room to myself. As if I don't stick out enough as it is… I've to be the only student that doesn't have to share a room with someone else.
Of course, the opposite of such would be impossible. Like locking my door, it was for my own safety.
You could never be too careful when you were the only human in a vampire academy.
Tired from being in class all night, I headed towards my shower to try to displace the almost-permanent chill from my bones and to warm my body.
Afterwards, I donned a pair of warm pajamas and padded across the stone floor, cursing my decision to not put on slippers. I closed the heavy curtains over the small window, saying a silent goodbye to the still-rising sun. The rest of my kind; humans, I mean; would just be waking up, starting their days and here I was, getting ready to end mine.
Exhausted, I pulled the heavy comforter up to my chin and began to drift off to sleep until the evening was born again.
