When our eyes adjusted to the light, three figures were standing with their backs to us discussing something. I cleared my throat loudly, and they turned around suddenly.
"Rowe your papers have been finalized. You will be leaving in three days time," Anthony said.
"Oh! Um......"I trailed off not sure how to explain that I wanted Amber to come too. "Anthony, can I speak to you in private?" He just shook his head, and gave me a look that told me we could talk later. Then he said "We need your signature, and you need to know what you will be doing." Anthony explained. The king cleared his throat rather loudly, and rudely I might add, making us all turn our heads toward him.
"Who is that girl with you?" He questioned.
    "Um...." I trailed off.
"I'm Amber," she piped in startling all of us.
"Why is she here?" The king asked.
"Because....she needs to talk to Anthony," I said quickly hoping he didn't catch the hesitation in my voice. He looked at me and snorted. Then he turned to the prince and asked "Is this really who you want to be your new most trusted servant?"
"Yes father. Please trust my judgement on this one I see something special in her," he replied to the stern gaze his father was giving him. The king looked away then stomped out if the room. The prince followed quickly, but not before saying "Sorry about my dad he's just really stressed out." After a few minutes of strained silence I finally broke the silence.
"Anthony?" I asked.
"Yes," he replied.
"Is there any way that Amber could...um" I said gesturing to the small figure in the corner "is there any way she could come with me to the palace? As maybe a kitchen maid or something close to where I will be working."
"Rowe I really have no control over that, but I might be able to convince the king. If not maybe you could talk to the prince?" He replied asking me a question at the same time.
"Ok. Please do what ever it takes... I don't what I'll do if she gets left behind," I replied my voice slowly fading to a whisper at the end.
"Listen Rowe, I will try to keep Amber safe if she can't go. But only if you go with the king with or without Amber, and work your hardest. We really need the money he says he is going to give us."
"I promise... just please keep Amber safe." After a tense silence I leave the room and walk down the hall to the girls rooms. When I step into the quiet room the whole room explodes with noise. All the other orphans are there including Amber. We have a few words, and I gather my few belongings. With my small bag of my two outfits I'm finally ready for the next part of my life. I pull over one of the other seniors, and told them to take over my job at the bakery. Then I walked back to the sitting room, and put my stuff in the middle of the room. I sat down to wait for the king and prince to come and retrieve me for tomorrow's work. During the three days before we left I would learn.
