Chapter 1;

Written by Eunice ;;

This was the only class I was failing, chemistry. I threw my shoulder bag onto the desk making a loud smack as it made contact with the wood. My best friend Jamie glanced at me with curiosity and a flash of uncertainty.

“What's wrong, Vee?” he took the seat next to me. I wrestle with my conscience to keep my mouth shut, but I couldn’t contain my anger. “You know schoolies at the end of the year? I'm not allowed to go unless I pass chemistry,” I huffed, folding my arms and pouting.

Jamie shrugged “s’not that hard…” I threw him a look of daggers, “Easy for you to say science nerd and I have to pass with flying colours.”

Jamie pretended to be offended, “Nerd, wow Vee way to hurt a guy’s self esteem, come on – you just mix things together in chemistry!” I rolled my eyes, “It’s not the theory of it, it’s the bloody teacher,” I seethed.

Jamie chuckled, “What your little crush on Mr Thompson?”

I scoffed, nearly having a heart attack, I swatted Jamie’s arm, “No. I hate Mr Thompson – he’s always picking on me, and getting all up me cause I'm not sure what the heck an atom is.”

I watched as Jamie’s face morphed into a thoughtful, “Do you ever think he could like you?” I gave him a sceptical look, “He’s a teacher, I'm a student – he just hates me,” he couldn’t like me, right?

“Well in some cases, when it’s not that easy to present one’s attraction they try and do it in subtle yet confusing ways,” Jamie pondered, I raised an eyebrow, “Have you been reading your mum’s Oprah magazine’s again?”

Jamie glared at me, his forehead crinkling, “I'm serious – think about it!” as soon as he finished his sentence finished Mr Thompson stepped through the door. His ruffled light brown hair, sparkling blue eyes, nice body and frame and his little stubble that made him even sexier.

Every girl in the school of course thought he was the hottest teacher here; most girls would sit at the front, showing their attention and also showing their cleavage. Today Mr Thompson was wearing a loose white shirt that rolled up to his elbows and low cut jeans, very casual.

Okay, it’s not my fault – today’s lesson I actually tried to pay attention! But what Jamie said kept replaying in my mine, present one’s attraction, he could like you?  think about it! Jamie’s voice echoed in my head, this was stupid – but why was I caring so much?

“Vanessa? Earth to Vanessa?” Mr Thompson’s hand was waving in front of my face.

I quickly snapped out of the swampiness of my thoughts, i sighed – once again I was going to get in trouble.

 “Glad you could join us again, was it hard for your attention span to stay awake during my lesson?” As he said this, the whole class laughed – they were all god damn suck ups. I just gave measly nod and tried not to fall asleep for the rest of the lesson.

I was watching Mr Thompson explain a demonstration when Jamie slid a note to me, example #1, and sign’s of teasing.  I scrunched up the note and shoved it in my pocket, deep in my pocket. There was no way that Mr Thompson thought of me as more than he’s delinquent student.

No more, right?

“Vanessa, stay back,” Mr Thompson spoke without even looking up from his desk, I hesitantly slung my bag across my shoulder as students escaped from the classroom – I envied them. Jamie gave me a reassuring smile before winking.

I flipped him the finger which wasn’t such a good thing since Mr Thompson wasn’t smiling and cautiously watching from his desk, “Close the door, please.” I swallowed loudly as I locked the classroom door.

I could feel my heart beat faster when Mr Thompson gestured for me to take a seat in front of him. “Now Vanessa,” he was only a head away, my eyes involuntary kept flickering to his lips. They were plump and pink; I bit my lip causing myself to snap back into reality.

“Hm?” I answered back, he had a solid and sculptured face, his jaw was perfectly framed. He was the definition of perfection, “You’re failing this class, if you do fail it this semester you won’t be able to get a high mark on your certificate…”

I nodded, dreamily imagining running my hand through his soft inviting hair, “Vanessa are you daydreaming, again?” Mr Thompson moved closer, an eyebrow raised – he didn’t know how good he looked, my breath went as he moved closer.

“Your just… unbelievable,” he gave a frustrated sigh and leaned back in his chair. I snapped out from my school girl crush that had just formed – I couldn’t believe I had been swooning over him, I shuddered in disgust.

“What? Are you going to tell me I'm stupid? Go on, I know you’re thinking it!” I folded my arms defensively.

Mr Thompson shook his head, “The thing is, you’re not – your incredible smart, but you seem to lose interest and capability to stay awake in my class.”

I bit my lip, “It’s not that I'm not interested, I really need to pass this subject – but I'm just… hopeless,” I hung my head in shame. Mr Thompson paused, “I have an idea, but you have to be committed.”

“I’ll do it!” Anything to go to schoolies. I wonder what it could be; my fingers were playing with the loose thread on my pale blue shirt.

“Every Wednesday I go to the local primary school and help the little kids with experiments – it’s like advance science, a science club. You are to come help me, maybe learn with people with the same size attention span as you,” a smug look appeared on his face, as if he was a genius.

I scrunched up my face, “stupid idiot,” I mumbled under my breath, “And if that doesn’t work?” I questioned. Mr Thompson smiled, “That’s why we’re having after school tutoring!” Oh great! More time with him, I swore quietly at the rate of my heart beat was increasing just at the thought.

“I suppose it’s worth a go…” I picked up my bag to go, before I could leave his hand wrapped around my wrist causing a jolt of electricity to run up my arm and explode at my heart. I pushed the heat away that rose to my cheeks.

“My card, just in case your parents have questions,” he flashed me another smile before letting me stumble out of his class. I leaned against the wall next to the lockers catching my breath, why was I acting like a school girl with a crush? Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. I thought.

I had forgotten his card was in my hand, I peered at it, Beau Thompson, PhD in science, specialises in chemistry. For some weird reason, on the other side of the card there was something scrawled in mess hand writing?

Chemistry is the science of atomic matter that is composed of chemical elements, but it also means the strong attraction and force between two people, in love.

“What does love have to do with science?” I mumbled to no one in particular, but my brain seem to whisper, everything.
