Damn She's Hot

All night I thought about Lily.

The next morning I woke up early, actually fixed my hair and straightened it with a flat iron, borrowed some of my mom’s makeup, and did my best to dress in layers like Lily did. I wore a denim skirt that I had always thought was too short, with leggings underneath for modesty, a red tank top, with a kind of see through red and white striped shirt on top.

When I looked in the mirror, I didn’t see myself. I looked like a different girl. I put effort into my appearance because I wanted Lily to think I was cool. Something about her intrigued me, like a moth to a lit candlewick.

I arrived to school in my boat just as Adam was parking his motorcycle. I stepped out of my car just as he took off his helmet.

“Is today picture day?” he asked.

“Nope,” I locked my door and closed it, “Just wanted to look pretty today.” I blushed a little bit. It was hard to admit that I wanted to look pretty.

“I like it,” Adam approved.

All the way to first period I could feel people staring at me. No one said anything to my face about my new look, but obviously they noticed it. I slid into my usual seat and got ready to take notes.

The room fell quiet again and I looked up to see Lily enter. Instead of curls, he hair was also flat ironed straight. She was dressed in layers again, this time a silver cotton sundress over black leggings and a black see through shirt. She waved at me, walked to the seat beside mine, and sat down.

“You look pretty,” Lily whispered to me.

“Thanks, you too,” I whispered back.

Everyone in the room was watching us, but the quickly went back to talking and horsing around. I found it hard to concentrate knowing she was so close I could literally reach out and touch her.

The thing about tiny schools is that you have pretty much every class with the same people. All of the seniors take the same classes, with the only variance being electives, so Lily and I were together until lunch.

“Do you want to sit with me?” I asked her as we walked side by side into the cafeteria.

Today she smelled like candy. All morning, I felt like everyone was watching us out of the corner of their eyes, my new candy smelling friend and I. I wondered if I was the only one hypnotized by her scent, her hair, and her amazing blue eyes. I even noticed Adam couldn’t keep his eyes off of us as we walked by him in the cafeteria.

“I’d love to! Yesterday was horrid! I was only pretending to read as everyone stared at me,” Lily followed me to the table in the back corner.

I saw Amy and Joelle’s expressions as we joined them; complete and total shock.

“Lily,” I so wanted them to like her, “This is Amy and Joelle. Amy and Joelle this is the new girl Lily.”

“Nice to meet you,” Lily gave them a dazzling smile.

Amy spoke first, “You too.”

“I saw you yesterday,” Joelle said, “Nice to meet you.”

Amy sipped her chocolate milk and gave me the eyes. That look meant what the heck are you thinking bringing her to our table.

I did my best to keep the small talk going. Lunch, my favorite time of the day, had somehow become work. Joelle asked Lily questions and at least tried to be friendly. Amy, on the other hand, was bringing us down. She would wiggle her eyebrows up and down as we talked, roll her eyes, and acted totally bored.

After lunch as Lily and I headed our separate ways to electives, I saw Adam in the hallway. He had his back to me, and was talking to another one of our misfit friends. I was just about to stop and say hey, like I normally would have, when I heard what he was saying.

“She is so damn hot,” Adam was saying.

Really Adam,” I said sarcastically and kept walking.

I didn’t want to hear about the newest girl that he had a crush on. He was a nobody at our school, but for some reason super popular with the girls in the next town over. I didn’t understand it, but to each their own.

If he said anything back I didn’t hear him. The guy he was talking too burst out laughing. Real mature on his part.

You may be asking why I’m telling you all this, but everything leads up to one specific moment in my life that happened at my birthday party.
