The Ride

We drive along the the road to the right of the ocean. Kane, who apparently knows how to drive not only my Dad's diesel but with a trailer attached to it, is driving. With the windows down, wind in my hair and Natalie leaning against Mark, asleep, in the back seat, we drive along the coast.

My Dad had already taught me how to drive the truck with the trailer attached, hitch and unhitch the trailer, disconnect and reconnect everything, and back the trailer into our spot. Which took several months to learn. But when I found out that Kane knew how to do those things also, it relived some of the stress of having to do everything by myself, and not to mention, on my birthday.

I drove halfway to the beach and when we took pit stop at a seven-eleven, to grab some cold drinks, he proposed that I let him drive the rest of the way to the beach. At first I responded to him with a nice and loud, "hell to the no fucking way!!" I rolled my eyes, helped Natalie with the drinks and snacks and walked back to the truck.

I place all the drinks it the cup holders and I am about to climb into the drivers seat when somebody takes hold of my wrist. My immediate reaction was to turn around and slap the person, which I did, straight across the face. The back of my hand stung from the strong impact and from the scrape of stubble. I look past my blurred, anger induced, vision. I see, "Kane?! What's your fucking problem?!? You can't just grab me like that!"  His face is shocked. His hand reaches up to touch the red mark left by my hand. "Damn! You sure know how to hit, little thang you are!" His deep voice causes my vision to clear, but does not dissipate my anger. By now Natalie has come over to try to calm me down. She touches her hand to my arm, I look over at her and my anger decreases, not disappearing entirely though. I take a deep breath, collect myself and speak to Kane maturely. "Why should I let you drive?"  "Well short stack," he says perpetually pissing me off, "you should allow me to drive because I know how and I would like to help such a lovely lady, like yourself, on her birthday weekend!" He says making me angrier and making me like him both at the same time. *Huh. I huff. "Well how would you know how to drive a diesel with a trailer attached?!" I say with my least genuine smile possible. He explains how his step dad taught him how to drive on a diesel and latter taught him to tow their trailer for a family vacation. "Well why didn't your real dad teach you?" I asked knowing it was probably a sensitive topic. "That douche bag walked out on my mom and me when I was two. " he says emotionless." Look, I'm sorry. I was just wary of letting other people drive my Dad's truck, afraid that they might crash and not only harm us but destroy my Dad's truck." We get in the car and Kane begins to drive to the beach.

Towards the beginning of the car ride the rest of the way to the beach I watched Kane carefully. Soon Natalie and Mark had fallen asleep together.

(A/N: this is where the first paragraph cuts in)

I pick up my Coke and cherry slurpee and wrap my lips around the straw. I feel Kane staring at me. I turn to look at him and say, "keep your eyes on the road." He turns his gaze onto the road, smiles and says, "sorry Short Stack, but the way you drink that is such a tease!" I blush and smack his arm, "knock it off! And stop calling me that!" He continues to drive and soon I recline my seat and fall into the dark depths of sleep.

*HONK*HONK*HONK "JAMIE!!! JAMIE NOO!!!" I scream awakening, tearing away from the clutches of the nightmares that grasp onto my mind, pulling on my heart strings. I pull my knees to my chest, sobbing Jamie's name. Natalie is rubbing my back, murmuring something that I can't understand. The hysteria has a strong grip on me and my emotions. "Sere, Serenity! Listen to me! Your okay! Jamie's okay, okay?? Listen to me! Look at me! Serenity!" I look at her. She strokes my hair. "Hey! Hey, look at me! Jamie. Is. Okay. I promise. He's at home. He's okay. Your okay. Calm down and breathe! Here, come sit back here." I nod "Babe could you switch seats with Serenity, please. " she says to Mark. "Yeah sure thing he says to her. I am shaking and I hear the car door open as Mark walks around to my door. We must be pulled over. Mark opens my door, "come here," he says with his arms open. I lean into him and he carries me to where he was sitting behind the driver's seat. "Hey Sere, you wanna call Jamie?" I nod. Natalie gets her phone and dials my Mom's number. She hands it to me and my Mom answers. "Hello?" She says. "Mom?" "Serenity? Oh hi how are you? Are you guys having fun? Did you get there yet?" "Well Mom actually, We're not there yet but I wanted to speak to Jamie," "Oh ok". I hear her call Jamie and a few seconds later Jamie my adorable 13 year old brother is on the phone. "Hi Senie!" "Hi Jame! How are you?" "I'm fine! Are you having fun?" "I, well we haven't gotten to the beach yet, but we'll be there soon! I just wanted to call and see how you were." "Okay!" "Alright bye Jame! I love you!!!" "Love you too!! Bye!!" "Bye,". I hang up and Natalie asks if I'm okay and I say yes.

"Who was honking anyway?" I ask Kane. He answers, "some dude sped through a red light, right in front of me!" "Oh, ok". We drove the rest of the way in silence.

Hey guys I hope you like the first chapter! This is the first book I've ever written on wattpad! I know there was no author's note in the very beginning, I forgot and was too lazy to fix it.

Shout out to Nataiplier11 who is my best friend and is Natalie in this book. She is also the author of When the Coffee Spills. Her book is a Markiplier fanfiction.
