This one shot is based of a book i read called the rain. Don't worry though, it's still completely understandable.
"EVERYONE STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND PLEASE RETURN TO YOUR HOMES. THIS IS NOT A WARNING. I REPEAT THIS IS NOT A WARNING!".The Speakers boomed all around Fiore.
Immediately all the villagers in Magnolia began to panic and scream. There had never been a single threat they needed to fear, since the local wizards would always annihilate it.
Gray Fullbuster looked around, fully on guard and preparing for an attack which never came. Instead the once blue sky crackled with lightning and the city was coated in a thick layer of smog.
'Lighting' he scoffed. If that's what the issue was then Laxus (the best lightning mage in Fairy Tail) could easily take it on.
Nevertheless Gray ran through the city, helping the normal people with no powers to defend themselves against the upcoming attack, into their homes.
"Gray" Erza called from far away. Erza was the strongest female wizard in Fairy Tail and a very good friend of his.
"Erza what's going on?" He demanded. The fairy queen who was holding a flustered Juvia responded "the magic council are blaming the rain. I don't know what is wrong with it but everyone in Fiore is being forced home. Master Markarov is requesting everyone back at the guild now". She said.
Rain. Unbelievable. Of all the thing's Fairy Tail had fought over the years, from Acnologia's attack on Tenroujma island to Zeref and the Alvarez empire almost wiping out the whole of humanity, they were being forced into hiding by a measly bit of rain.
A cough brought him back to reality and he saw Juvia slipping from Erza's grasp. He was immediately on guard. "What's wrong with Juvia" he said taking the water mage into his arms.
"I believe she's being affected by the rain" Erza replied as another crack of thunder was heard. "Its getting closer" she mumbled and looked around...nervously? Impossible. The great Titania never felt nervous and that made the ice mages stomach churn .
"Gray i need to help the rest of the villagers and return to the guild. Looking at the state of Juvia you'll never make it back in time. I suggest you take refuge somewhere and look after her. Whatever you decide to do, DO NOT go out into the rain"
Ah. There she was. His bossy, tyrant of a friend was back and it made him feel oddly secure.
Gray ran through the thick mist in search for a hideout. At first he thought about sneaking into Lucy's house but he knew that wasn't a good idea.
Eventually he came across a small cave near the harbour of Magnolia. It didn't look completely rain proof but it would have too do.
So he entered the dark cave that was large enough for both of them to lie down in.
The girl in his arms began to shiver so he removed his jacket and placed it on her gently.
Gray sat down quietly. Was it possible that a little bit of rain could do what multiple dark wizards had failed to?
When the rain finally started he sighed in relief. It looked exactly like it always had. Gray and depressing.
SLAP! He heard as he hit himself over the face. How could he have been so stupid? Believing that a few drops of rain would defeat Fairy Tail.
Yet as he rejoiced he looked concerned at his friend. Since the beginning of the rainfall Juvia had become increasingly worse. Her breathing had become ragged and uneven and red blotches began to appear all across her skin.
"Juvia" he whispered as a new kind of fear washed through him. "Gray sama" she called with tears in her eyes.
BOOM!
He fell to his knees and hugged the girl to his body. For years Juvia had been in love with him. Her loyalty was something he always admired even if it resulted in the 'occasional' stalking and lots of death threats.
"CITIZENS OF MAGNOLIA DO NOT STEP OUT INTO THE RAIN. IT IS POISONOUS AND YOU WILL DIE. ALL WATER IS CONTAMINATED AND OF LIMITS. I REPEAT DO NOT STEP OUT INTO THE RAIN"
That explained it. If the water was contaminated then so was Juvia. After all she was a water mage and her body was made of water.
Did that mean she was was going to die? No. He would not allow it.
He had been given a responsibility to look after his comrade and he wasn't about to break it.
Anyway...maybe he did have feelings for her. After all Juvia had been a huge part in his life. It wasn't until Fairy Tails disbandment for a year that he realised though.
"Gray...sama" she cried in his arms and his heart toor apart. It was the exact same pain he had felt when his father died in that fight. A feeling of despair...and loneliness. A feeling that you would never be able to recover.
He looked outside the cave. 10 minutes until it would come flooding in.
He desperately tried to come up with a plan until one vaguely appeared. It was stupid and risky for the decease could be contagious, but he didn't care.
Gray shut his eyes. He breathed in deeply and placed his palms above Juvia's body. A chill entered the cave and embraced the two of them as he released his magical energy into her.
Juvia's body began to freeze. "Maybe if i freeze the water in her body it will stop spreading" . It was a feeble attempt because he didn't even know what 'it' was.
Juvia began to scream. Her face contorted with agony and she began scratching at herself. He couldn't hold it in. He began to cry.
Not only was he scared but seeing the one he loved cry because of him broke his heart.
"FUCK" he screamed and hurled a rock across the cave. Juvias sobs increased.
His skin began to crack and bleed. No no no. This couldn't be happening. How had this happened?
Then he realised. He used ice magic, and ice was made of water. He was going to die too. He laughed. All of those times his friends had saved him meant nothing.
He had so many things he wanted to achieve in life though. He wanted to get married and have a happy family. Something that had been failed to give to him.
He wanted to watch Wendy and Romeo grow up into wonderful adults. He wanted to finally out man Elfman. He wanted to watch his two stupid best friends realise they love each other.
But what he wanted the most was to be with Juvia. And he couldn't accomplish that alive or dead. "Gray sama" Juvia whispered again and he lay beside her.
He tried to soothe her as much as he could, but he was now in a state that made it almost impossible to talk.
The two listened calmly to the beating of the contaminated rain as it hit the cave floor. It came flooding in as more of their flesh was inwardly eaten.
He began to shut his eyes for the pain was too much to bare and they both wished. "Please Fairy Tail. Forgive us"
BANG!!!
The two intertwined bloodied fingers as they slowly fell out of consciousness with regretful expressions on their faces.
