HERO

"Mommy, mommy!" Two kids came running into the living room where their mum and dad sat, watching TV. One of the kids; a six years old girl with silky blonde hair jumped onto mommy's lap. The other girl; only four years jumped onto daddy's lap. "Didn't we say goodnight to you already?" Their mum said already knowing what they came down here to ask. She could not help but to smile. Her youngest daughter asked, “Can you tell us the story about the Hero who saved your life mommy?” Their mum looked at her husband. He nodded and then smiled. The girls squealed before making themselves comfortable in their parents lap.

“Well, there was this teenage girl, age 16…”

One of the girls interrupted saying “It’s you! Right mommy?”. “Yes baby, it’s me” she half laughed, before continuing her story.

“Normal life, normal teenager that’s what everyone was thinking. What everyone was expecting. This girl had been through some bad things in her life. People treated her badly. They said mean things to her. Shouted at her with bad words. Her mom was sick and could not properly take care of her daughter when she had a rough day. She had no friends. Her days at school was always the same, terrible. The only thing she was looking forward to when she woke up in the morning was this boy. He had curly brown hair and beautiful green eyes. She loved hearing him laugh, she loved seeing him smile and just be happy, because that made her happy too. She would spend her whole day alone, in her dark bedroom looking at pictures and videos of this boy. How did she get the videos you may ask…?”

She looked at her daughters and they eagerly nodded their little heads.

“… Well, they were all over the internet. Everyone could see them. Everyone knows who he is. Often she would find these pictures of him with other girls, but she never got jealous, never. Because deep inside her she knew, that he was their hero too. That is how she spent her days, with him. Even though he was not there beside her, he was still with her, in her heart. On her way to school, she would think about him. How she was looking forward to seeing him. Unfortunately, by the end of the day she would have forgotten. All she thought about when she walked into the bus was how no one wanted her here. That everyone thought she was ugly and stupid for obsessing over a boy that would never know she existed. She thought that maybe that is the easiest thing to do… To leave this world. Nobody would even notice. By the time she walked inside her house she would be so ready to leave, but then she see the picture again. The same picture that saves her every day. The picture of the curly haired boy, and then she thinks to herself: ‘The boys and girls at school are right though. He does not know that I exist and he would certainly not notice if she left. BUT if she leave she will never see HIS face again’, and just that. That was enough to keep her going for another day…”

She stopped talking for a couple of seconds to wipe away a few tears. “Mommy?” her youngest daughter asked. Her husband held her hand, giving her an encouraging squeeze.

“One day she came home from school and the picture was gone. At first, she did not notice that it was gone because she was just used to walking into the room and seeing it and then all the pain would go away. Since she did not see the picture, she went over to the bed. She opened the top drawer on the small nightstand beside the bed. Inside she found a mirror. She took a good look at herself in the mirror before smashing it in the nearest wall…”

She looked over at her husband once more. Looking into his eyes, he mouthed ‘I love you’ and that was all she needed to continue.

"… She walked over to the broken glass and picked up one big piece of the broken glass…”

The oldest daughter lifted up her mums sleeve and stroked her along the big scar on her arm going all the way from the wrist and up to the inside of her elbow. Her mother sighed.

“The girl hurt herself in ways that no one should. As she fell to the floor, she spotted a frame under the bed. She reached out for it and saw that it was the picture of the green-eyed boy. Looking around she found her phone on the floor right next to her bed and she grabbed it and called 911 before passing out. The paramedics got there just in time to save her. They found her with the picture in her hand so the paramedics decided to take it with them. Like everything else in that fan base, this came out and people started tweeting about what had happened. The curly haired boy saw it.”

She smiled to herself remembering the day he noticed her, even though it was in a terrible situation.

“He came to visit her. She was still unconscious. The picture standing on the nightstand next to her. He took her hand and he sat beside her until she woke up. She woke up 15 hours later to the sight of her hero by her side. He was by her side then, he is by her side now and he always will be”

Both of her daughters gave her a big hug and a kiss on the cheek “We love you mommy!” they said while hugging her again. They then crawled over to their dad giving him a big hug as well before running out of the living room. It only took a second before they both came running back again giving their dad a kiss on the cheek. The oldest one of them said “ You’re my hero too dad” Then the youngest almost whispered “ Mine too” she leaned in closer to his ear and whispered, only for him to hear “thanks for saving mommy” and then they both once again ran out of the living room. This time all the way up to their rooms. The curly haired boy with the beautiful green eyes leaned in close to his wife giving her a soft kiss on the lips. “I love you,” he said. “I love you too”
