It was a warm summer's day, and Edward, Renesmee and I were out hunting in the forest by our cottage.
Edward and I were running hand in hand, while Nes was slightly ahead, her long curls swaying side to side, and the sunlight causing her skin to have a slightly glowing appearance. It had been 6 years since the Volturi had come, when we'd gathered all the witnesses in the big clearing to prove that Renesmee - our half human, half vampire child - was not a fully immortal child.
We were hunting 3 or 4 mountain lions that we'd scented earlier - this many could be dangerous if allowed to roam free, so we felt as though we were doing the humans in Forks a favour by removing the threat of a lion attack. (Also, their blood was delicious).
It had been a while since we had hunted, and we were running faster than normal through the dense forest. This was because the normally cloudy Forks had been uncharacteristically sunny these past few weeks, and although Edward and I could've gone while it was dark, we waited to go with Nes so we could spend some time with her. We didn't see her as much as we'd like since she moved in with Jacob a couple of months ago - they lived in a house close to where I used to live, in Charlie's house.
Edward squeezed my hand as we slowed down. I looked up at his beautiful, sparkling face in confusion as to why we had stopped. I could never get over his beauty, even though we'd been together nearly 8 years - his bronze-coloured hair, topaz eyes (though right now, like mine, they were black with thirst) and my favourite crooked smile.
"They're close" he whispered in his velvet voice. It took me a moment to understand what he meant, as I, as always, had been distracted by looking at him.
I forced my eyes away from his and looked over to Nes, who had stopped. She caught my eye and pointed south, through the trees. The forest was so beautiful in the sunlight, everything becoming so much clearer - so I could see the clearing where she was pointing.
I understood that the lions must be close, so it was time to hunt. I let go of all my thoughts and rational thinking and let my instincts take over, going into a hunting crouch as I smelt and heard their heartbeat, pumping the delicious blood round their veins. Beside me, I could feel Edward doing the same, as he crouched to echo my stance. Nes lead the way, although none of us needed guiding - the scent drew us all. Creeping quietly, we went through the trees - spotting them across the clearing. There were 4, like we'd predicted. Dashing across the clearing, I pounced on one of the lions and, before it could understood what was happening, I had sunk my teeth into its neck and was drinking rapidly. It was such a relief - I was only 6 years old (in vampire terms) so I hadn't had as long as Edward to control thirst for so long.
Too soon, the lion was empty and I pushed it away, looking around. Edward had finished his lion and was helping Nes finish hers, the sun turning us all into walking diamonds. Being half human, Nes didn't quite have the same speed that we did, so she'd lost the element of surprise with her prey, meaning that it was putting up a bit of a fight. Luckily, it couldn't hurt any of us, thanks to our impenetrable skin.I smiled as I watched them together - my perfect family. Edward heard what I was thinking, looked over and grinned. I often removed my mental shield, as Edward preferred to be able to hear what I was thinking.
"Nice one, Nes" I said, referring to the size of her lion - she'd killed the biggest one, and for a half human, that must have been a challenge. Nes finished her lion and stood up smugly. As normal, both her and I had stained our clothes, not quite being as neat as Edward, who rarely even got a hair out of place on hunting trips. Still, he'd had over 100 years longer than us to perfect his hunting technique.
"Should keep us going for a while" I commented, flitting to Edward's side. "Mountain lions are a rare treat."
"Shame," Nes said, "They're so good - better than the human food Jacob makes". She sighed happily. "Best meal I've had in weeks".As we nodded in agreement, I suddenly caught the sound of a lion hitting the ground across the clearing. In an instant, with a growing sense of unease, I suddenly remembered that there were 4 lions in this clearing, and we'd only killed 3. In the same second that I processed this, Edward, moving so fast he was a blur, moved to a protective crouch in front of me and Renesmee.
"Who are you?" He hissed.
Shocked at this sudden turn of events, I peered round his head to look at who he was talking to. That they were a vampire, first of all, was obvious. We would've been able to smell a human while we were hunting, and we'd ensured that there were none around before hunting. Across the clearing, the 4th lion lay dead on the floor, and next to it crouched a vampire who had clearly just been feeding from it. She had long, black wavy hair and looked to be around 16 years old. She glared at us through vivid red eyes. A newborn.
