p r o l o g u e

“It was in the woods. It talked to me,” she said. Her eyes were still glued to the floor, oblivious to what I was saying.

I opened my mouth to calm her – “Why do you always do that?” She said, her voice cracking at the end. Taking a few steps back, she closed her eyes. “D-Do what?”

“You never believe me.” Talking to her made me feel uneasy, as if I shouldn’t be – but I knew I should be; it was just the feeling surrounding me. And despite how much I tried to ignore it, it was still there – waiting to engulf me any moment I snap.

I took a few steps closer to her. “It’s kind of hard to believe. But believe me, I’m trying.” I said the last word as if it was the most obvious thing in the universe.

She fell to her knees, burying her face in her hands. “If one day I disappear, will you believe me by then?”
