Steven's feet pounded against the pavement as he ran across a parking lot and towards the city hospital's entrance. The darkness of the night surrounded him, the cold breeze nipping at his tear streaked cheeks. Steven lifted his hand up to wipe a few stray tears away with a loud sniffle. Never in his life had Steven felt so much fear for his family. His lips were trembling, his eyes red and bloodshot, and small whimpers continued to escape him.
As Steven approached the hospital doors, he braced himself before barging through them. The eyes of everyone in the lobby turned to the traumatized man who had just rushed in.
"Where are they?" Steven cried, leaning up against the front desk towards the nurse who sat at the computer. "Where are my wife and daughter?!"
Wife.
That was the first time Steven had called Lauren his wife since the divorce.
The nurse gave Steven a confused look.
Steven ran his hands through his hair in frustration. "My wife and daughter are hurt....they need me! I need to be with them!"
"Okay sir, I'm going to need you to calm down," the nurse said, trying to settle Steven's rapid breathing. "What are you wife and daughter's name?"
After a moment, Steven managed to stutter out, "Isabella and Lauren Yeun."
The nurse tapped her fingers against the computer's keyboard, and Steven waited anxiously in front of her. "Your daughter is down in the operating room and-"
Steven cut her off, for that was all that I needed to hear. He then rushed away from the front desk and towards the hallway that led into the OR. Once again, everyone's eyes turned towards the frantic man.
"Sir, you can't go in there!" The nurse at the desk called out, and stood up from her chair. "That hallway is for doctors only!"
As soon as Steven made it to the door that allowed entrance to the OR hallway, two male doctors rushed out. One placed a firm hand on Steven's shoulder, pushing him back slightly.
"I'm sorry, but you can't go in there," the doctor said.
"That's my child in there!" Steven yelled out, pointing his finger towards the OR hallway.
The doctor was about to respond when another door leading to a hallway opened, and out came Lauren along with a nurse.
Her complexion was the same as Steven's.
Lauren's eyes were bloodshot with long tear streaks trailing down her red cheeks. It was more than obviously that she had not stopped crying since the incident.
Both Lauren and Steven looked at each other in shock for a moment, both of their mouths hanging open. When they were both done taking in each other's presence, Steven rushed over to Lauren, pulling her tightly in his arms.
They both lost balance for a moment, and Lauren buried her face into Steven's shoulder, gripping onto his hair with shaky fingers. Steven heard her let out a sob, and tightened his grip around her waist.
"I'm sorry," Lauren cried out.
"I'm sorry."

••Flashback to the incident••
A single gunshot rang out, making everything in the diner go silent. Lauren set down the coffee pot she was holding and looked out the window along with everyone else. She couldn't get a clear view of the situation, so Lauren picked up the coffee pot and moved towards one of the windows.
Right when she saw what had happened, Lauren let the coffee pot slip out out of her hand in shock before sprinting out the diner doors.
"No!" She screamed out, seeing her daughter lying in the grass with blood pouring out of her stomach.
Without wasting a second, Lauren ran over and fell to the ground next to Bella.
"Mommy....it hu-rts," Bella stuttered out, tears rolling from her eyes. Lauren could see her daughter's skin getting pale, and she grabbed onto Bella's hand.
"Somebody call nine one one!" Lauren screamed out, turning to look at Norman who was holding a man down on the ground. "Somebody call nine one one!"
Lauren could feel herself beginning to cry, and she turned back to Bella, but by the time their eyes met, it seemed too late.
