Prologue.
Keren sat on the charred piece of wood that was once her bed. She came to her old home to remember. The wooden staircase she remembered racing up excitedly to write in her secret diary, the soft couch she and her father sat on as he told her tales of princes and faeries. All reduced to the ashes that blew through her hair. But most of all, she had come here to remember him. Her good friend, who risked life and limb to ensure her safety. She remembered the times they spent sat on the roof of their houses, gazing at the stars and talking of the future. That time he and Raiden fought in the arena, and she tended to his wounds as he lay in the sand defeated. The time he stayed behind, the last time she saw him. Those final moments, as she was carried away screaming for him to come with them. The way he smiled as he shook his head. The fear in his eyes.
She stood up. Slowly, she made her way down what was left of her stairs. She trailed her fingers on the remains of the couch, and looked skyward. The dust that filled the air shielded the sun’s rays, and through the dim grey light she saw the slight outline of the second moon. And there she stood, waiting for him, like she promised she would.
