Chapter Thirteen
“Morning, Lexi. Time to get up.” I grumbled a word of complaint as I was shaken awake. I rolled over in my new bed and opened my eyes to be greeted with my dad’s green eyes looking into my own.
“Morning, Angel.”
“Morning, Dad,” I replied.
“Get up. Breakfast is ready,” he told me. I watched him leave the room before sitting up and thinking about last night. I really didn’t know what to do about Jasmine but I guess I’d just have to put up with her until Caiden arrived.
I got out of bed and looked in my new wardrobe. I took out a pair of black skinny jeans and a blue t-shirt then got changed into them before going to brush my teeth.
Once I had finished washing my face, I headed downstairs. My bare feet padded against the tiled floor as I walked into the kitchen. My dad was plating up bacon sandwiches.
“Morning,” I said and sat on one of the island stools.
“Hey, Lexi,” he replied. He placed a plate in front of me and I smiled gratefully as he sat across from me. I started eating my sandwich but almost choked when Jasmine walked into the kitchen. She was wearing a short pink dress and black wedges. She kissed my dad then sat down beside him.
“So, I was thinking that maybe the two of you could go shopping today,” my dad suggested. I internally rolled my eyes. Of course he’d suggest that. He wanted his family to get along. But I didn’t know how much more of Jasmine I could take.
“That sounds lovely,” Jasmine replied. I wanted to scream at my dad and tell him that I didn’t want to be alone with her and that she’d only be even more horrible to me.
“Great,” my dad smiled.
“We’ll set off in half an hour, okay?” Jasmine said to me. It took a lot of strength for me to nod without showing any sign of hatred towards her. Then I remembered that I wouldn’t have to go shopping with Jasmine because Caiden would arrive soon.
Right on cue, there was a knock on the door. I tried to hide my smile as my dad got up and left the room. Jasmine’s smile vanished and she glared at me.
“Listen, Alexis, I don’t want to go on this shopping trip any more than you do. So I’ll buy a few things and meet a few of my friends then we can come back here,” she told me.
“What makes you think that I’m going to just follow you around all day?” I asked.
“Because you wouldn’t want Nathan to be upset because you won’t make the effort to get along with me.”
“You can’t treat me like this.”
“Oh, just you watch me.”
I was about to snap back when my dad came back into the kitchen.
“Lexi, why is he here?” he asked me.
“Who?”
“You know who, Alexis. Why is he here?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I lied as Caiden walked into the room. I couldn’t hide my smile anymore as I ran over to him and almost jumped into his arms.
“Green eyes,” he whispered as he let go of me. I smiled at him and he kissed me.
“And who is this?” Jasmine asked. I rolled my eyes and Caiden stifled a laugh. He laced our fingers together and I turned around.
“This is my boyfriend, Caiden,” I told her and she smiled plastically.
“Isn’t he a little old for you, Babe?” she said. Caiden protectively pulled me behind him slightly.
“You two go into the living room and I’ll be in there in a minute to talk to you both,” my dad told us. I left the room with Caiden and led him into the living room. We sat down on the sofa and I smiled.
“Thanks,” I whispered and he kissed my cheek.
“Right then, Alexis,” my dad started as he sat down. “Do you want to tell me why Caiden’s here?”
“I don’t know,” I lied.
“Alexis, no one could’ve given him my address but you.”
“I just missed him.”
"You should’ve asked me first.”
“Well, I didn’t.”
“Alexis,” my dad warned.
“Don’t talk to her like that,” Caiden piped up. My dad looked at him and frowned.
“Caiden, give us a minute,” he said. Caiden’s jaw clenched but he stood up and left the room.
“Alexis, I know that you haven’t known me for long but this is my house and I am your dad so I need you to ask me before you invite Caiden here,” he told me.
“I wouldn’t have invited him if I didn’t need him,” I replied.
“Why do you need him? You could’ve just seen him on Sunday night,” he asked. At that moment, the door burst open and Jasmine walked in.
“Caiden is waiting for you,” she said to me. I stood up and marched past her. Caiden smiled when he saw me.
“Hey, beautiful,” he greeted.
“I can’t wait to get out of here,” I whispered. He pulled me into a hug and kissed my hair.
“Don’t let her win.”
“I don’t want to see my dad if it means that she’ll do this to me.”
“Alexis, your dad has missed thirteen years of your life already and now he’s trying to make up for it. Don’t let some big-headed girl mess that up for you. I think you need to tell your dad,” he told me.
“He won’t believe me,” I replied.
“What reason have you got to lie?” he pointed out.
“I haven’t. But he’ll always pick Jasmine over me,” I said.
“What makes you think that?” my dad asked from behind me. I let go of Caiden and turned around to see my dad. I stared at him for a moment, unsure of what to do.
“I think we’d better talk,” he told me. I nodded and he took my hand and we went upstairs and into my bedroom. I sat down on the bed and he sat beside me.
“Do you want to tell me what’s going on?” he asked. When I didn’t reply he sighed and took my hand in his.
“Alexis, I love you very much and I know that you’re a sweet and honest girl who wouldn’t hurt anyone on purpose. So whatever it is that’s bothering you, just tell me when you’re ready. I want to be here for you, Lexi. And you’re my daughter. You’ll always come first,” he told me and I smiled weakly.
“I love you, Dad,” I said and he hugged me.
“I love you too, princess.”
