My dearest, Laurens

I remember quite clearly

when the two of us were aide-de-camp to Washington

You acted as if you had no nightmares

But I heard you

I heard the small whimpers you made in your sleep

and the gasping breaths you took as you woke up

The bags under your eyes due to the lack of sleep

I remember it all so vividly

And I remember

one night

sliding my arm across you

and pulling you into my embrace

You spun around and buried your head snuggly into my chest

and suddenly your midnight whimpers ceased

I do not know what begged me to do it,

My dearest, Laurens,

but perhaps it is something that need not understanding

only acceptance

I had never felt my heart so broken

as when I heard your midnight whimpers

to a nightmare I couldn't see

thus making it hard for me to understand what you were going through

but Laurens

I feel blessed that I could do something to make your troubled nights cease
