Dedicated to a person whose story made me laugh...despite everything happening in my life right now. Thank you. It felt good to laugh again.

Oh, and this chapter's recently edited...so ignore all old comments! I've changed the second half a lot!

CHAPTER TWO: The Hunter and the Dodo

“He’s a disgusting idiot,” I told Alanna the next morning as we walked to school together. “Harris really must hate me. Maybe he caught me yawning during one of his assemblies or something and decided to punish me.”

“The Charles Darwin Community College strives to be outstanding. You are all outstanding. We will be outstanding,” Alanna intoned in so close an imitation of Harris’ dull voice that I would have laughed on any other day.

Today, though, I was still too angry. “Yeah, well, this is going to be an outstanding nightmare, trying to mentor that jerk. Just being near him makes me want to scrub myself clean with bleach and a wire brush.”

Alanna snorted. “I know what you mean. Being around him does make you feel dirty, doesn’t it? Like he oozes filth.”

“Mainly from his mouth,” I agreed, glaring at a nearby hedge as though it was to blame.

“You're really freaking out, aren't you?" She looked at me. "Seriously, don't get your knickers in a twist over Sonny bloody Flynn.”

“Sonny has nothing to do with my knickers!” I snapped.

“OK.” Alanna looked suspiciously like she was trying to hide a grin at my unfortunate choice of words. “But if you let that idiot get to you, then he’s won. So what if he makes a few nasty comments? That boy is either going to end up in prison or dead by the time he’s twenty. Just ignore him.”

Easier said than done.

By the end of the morning, I could only be grateful that I didn’t have any lessons with Sonny. It was bad enough that every time he saw me in the corridors he made some comment about ‘ball-handling skills’ at the top of his voice. At lunchtime, I was unlucky enough to be entering the canteen just as he was leaving. Seizing yet another opportunity to humiliate me, he stood in the canteen doorway, refusing to let me through despite the queue forming along the corridor. “Say please, Evangeline,” he commanded.

“Get out the way, Sonny,” I growled, aware of the people around, watching our little exchange. Everyone was listening and I hated it.

“That’s not very polite,” he reprimanded, his eyes coldly serious. “Don’t you have any manners, Evangeline?”

“It’s not me that’s blocking the door.”

“I’ll have to teach you some manners tomorrow then,” he promised.

“Sounds like fun. I’ll look forward to it.” I glared at him, refusing to be the first to look away. If he thought that I was some wimpy pushover, he could think again.

“So will I, Evangeline. I’m really looking forward to it.” With those ominous words, he twisted so that – although he still stood in the doorway with his back against the frame – I now had a small space to squeeze past.

Trouble was, in order to fit I’d have to slip through with either my back or my front towards Sonny…

I chose to keep him in sight. Taking a chance, I thrust through the gap – just as he purposefully took a step forward. The space between us collapsed, my breasts rubbing against his chest, our bodies far too close.

Arsehole.

His crowd of ever-present flunkies tittered as I beat a hasty retreat.

“Don’t be late tomorrow!” he called, eliciting another burst of mocking laughter from his fan club. “I want you there at twelve-fifteen on the dot!”
