Chapter Two: Nimiane

I search around the huts, asking everyone if they needed help with anything. They all seemed to be set on their own. I never have anything to do, so I wander over to a nearby lake in the middle of a grassy plain, while the tall weeds tickle my legs.

I plop myself in the dirt and stick my toes in the water. The cold feels refreshing, so I strip off my clothes to take a dip. This lake is my refuge, where I go when no one needs me, where I can escape the world and travel into the depths of my own nature and escape reality for a while. I swim and splash underwater following the graceful patterns of the fish.

I dive down deeper and see something that catches my eye. I swim closer to it and snatch it up in my hand. I make a break to the surface and crawl back on the shore and examine it. The round stone is shiny with different shades of white and blue; it's beautiful.

I dress myself up again and head back to my hut with the precious stone in my pocket and the gentle breeze coming across my face.

I came back home and was curious to see if this gem I found was worth anything at all since it looked so precious. I figured the only one to have the answer to that was Mother Heammawihio. I bounded on over to her tent. I slowly lifted the skin tarp and quietly entered.

"Can I help you, young one?" She asked me.

"Yes. Can you tell me if this gem has any purpose?" I replied while dropping the stone in her hands. She nodded and put the gem on a small piece of cloth and did a chant while having her hands on top of the stone. I quietly watched her. Then she looked at me.

"Ah, this gem holds many secrets. There are spirits captured inside this stone."

"Are they good or bad spirits?" I asked, intrigued.

"I'm afraid I don't know the answer to that one. All I know is that there are many spirits in here."

"Thank you, Mother Heammawihio," I replied sincerely. I then crawled out of her hut and headed for mine.

I quickly crawled through the doorway and pulled out the rock. I put it right up to my eye to see if I could see spirits inside of the gemstone. "Hello little spirits. Are you in there?" I asked the rock. I felt like a child playing with rag dolls. I couldn't see any spirits. I grabbed my mothers sewing kit and starting making a small hole in the top of the rock. Once I did that, I threw some string into the hole and tied the stone around my neck. "I'll wear it as a good luck charm," I thought to myself,"Maybe something good will come out of it."

When I went back outside, I realized I missed today's dinner. Oh well, I always miss it. Chief must not care anymore that I miss out on meals since he can barely get ahold of me anyways. I saw everyone returning to their huts to spend time with family and head in for a long days rest.

My mother and father crawled into the hut and sat down beside me. My father started up a fire and got situated in is sleeping sack, not caring about what I did today, as if I thought he was going to care today. Mother sat beside me.

"What did you do today, honey?" She asked me.

"Oh, just the usual," I replied.

"What's that pretty rock around your neck?"

Surprised she noticed, I replied, "Oh I found it in the lake not too far from here. It was at the bottom. Isn't it pretty? Mother Heammawihio said that there are spirits in it. Isn't it cool?"

"Splashing Water!" She yelled, "What if there are demons in there!" She ripped the gem off my neck and whipped it outside in the darkness. "Are you crazy?! You could have let the demons escape and they could've killed us! I never want to see that thing again! And just for doing that unholy move, you aren't allowed to sleep inside the hut for tonight. I want to make sure the demons are out of your body." She did a prayer on me and threw me outside. I crawled away from the hut and dragged myself to the lake I like to call home. I cried and cried on the shore by the water for what seemed like hours, but then I ended up falling into a deep, peaceful sleep.

I'm not sure if I was dreaming or not, but I walked away from home, into the woods that were several miles away. As I walked in, I observed every tree and every plant. Then, I came across a tree I thought was perfect. Not one leaf was out of place. It was like I was staring at a painting. I looked down at my neck, seeing the gem was still secured on me, but this time, it seemed brighter, as if it were glowing. I took it off my neck and observed it. When I glanced up, a bright silhouette of what seemed to look like an old tribe chief greeted me. "Who are you?" I asked nervously.

"I am Chief Michgun." Without pausing to let me speak, he continues gravely. "Keep that pearl, child. You were meant to find it. It allows you to see, communicate, and fight off spirits. Nimiane of the Missipi Tribe, you have been chosen to Embody Water."

Though I know it's extremely rude to interrupt an elder, I can't help myself. "My name isn't Nimiane."

"Silence, Lady of the Lake. You have the power to manipulate water. Soon you will meet others with similar abilities, as well as a trainer who will hone your skills as an Embodiment. You're journey may be difficult at first, but you mustn't give up."

"If I may ask --"

"You and three others will have to defeat a higher grandmaster who has been wreaking havoc upon the forest," he says, ignoring me. "He must be stopped. If you fail your task, he will take your souls to his army and continue to use his powers for evil. If you complete this task, you will be known as heroes in the Spirit Realm. Fate is in your hands, Nimiane...." Chief Michgun vanished.
