A/N: This is a story I thought of when this man came to our school to talk to us about Lock Downs. Then (the people in our school, being the people in our school) some girls started asking "What if..." Questions giving different senarios which gave me the idea of this short story! Ok, so check out my other book and bio please!!!

The Lock Down

“Get under your desks,” Ms Bell grinds out, “Now.” Her eyes filled with worry and tears.

“Please!” She begs. Holly and I look at each other and do as we are told as do the rest of our IT class.

“This is a lock down, please stay calm and we will get through this, don’t do anything to attract attention, he is armed and crazy but I’ll protect you as best as I can.” She whispers as she draws the curtains closed and flicks the light which so we are surrounded in darkness. Our eyes quickly adjust and we clutch at each other, tears rolling down our faces and panic in our eyes. Quiet everywhere. No sound but our rough breathing and quiet sobbing from fear. We are absolutely terrified and my arms are numb from holding Holly so tight. Suddenly the Speakers crackle to life, The Australian Anthem hisses over the speaker for a few seconds, skipping tracks like a record with cracks and scratches all over it. Then suddenly it stops with a sizzle. No sound. All is quiet.

My face turns purple from holding in a breath. I exhale how you do when you are extremely frightened of the mentally disturbed person walking around your school with a gun and a knife - slowly and as quietly as possibly. Everything is deafeningly silent and it’s driving me crazy. Then there is only one noise, step, step, step. The sound of boots on cement outside our door. I squeal and Holly shoves her hand over my mouth as fast as she can to stop the killer outside from hearing but it’s too late. Slowly the door opens with a creak and we all duck as low as we can.

“Hello,” He says slowly, “Why would you be crying, I’m not that scary am I?” His face slowly stretches into a cold, sick and amused smirk. I hiccup and draw shuddering breaths as I look into his unfocussed eyes, he is completely mad. We have no chance. He slowly walks over to where Holly and I are crouched low to the floor under our desks.

Ms Bell steps up and says, “No wait, take m-“

BANG

Ms Bell crumples to the floor and blood gushes out of her forehead. She’s gone, we all rush over to her screaming and my body racks with fear, sadness and anger. How could someone be that merciless to do that?

“Now you are all going to line up over against that wall. Don’t move and we are going to have some “fun”. It will only hurt a little… maybe I’m lying.” HE finishes with a sick twist of his mouth that he may call a smile. He grabs Holly by the arm, who shrieks in panic, and says, “Or else this one won’t get to see her parents ever again.” Emphasizing the “ever”.

We all do as he says and he pushes Holly to the wall, and rips off her top. “Let’s go” He snarls.

Kate tries to go get Holly and I scream, “DON’T” but it is too late, the shot rings off the walls, pops my ear drums and Kate is on the floor. Another one. An innocent person. Gone. Never to get a hug from her mother, kisses from her father, advice from a friend on a little, tiny issue like boy troubles. Why did that happen? Because she wanted to stick up for a friend who was going to get hurt.

He chuckles a slow lazy laugh and turns back to Holly, “See what happens when you try to go against me?”

We didn’t get to answer his rhetorical question when another shot goes off. This time this mad man was at the other end of the gun.

Police rush through the door and relief rushes through me, he is gone. I race to Holly and hug her tightly and she sobs into my shoulder. Nothing will ever be the same again. One of the paramedics peals Holly off me and starts to ask some questions. All I hear is white noise and the floor gives way and I fall back into a dark silence.  “We were just learning how to Photoshop” I thought as I drifted out of consciousness…
