Chapter One:

As I was laying on the rooftop of my old, suburb home, I kept thinking of the topic that had been on my mind today. This morning, a little, petite freshman came into school with these big new glasses. I was walking behind her and the whole way to her locker, I heard horrible nicknames being spat out at her and all I did was listen. That was the big reason that I'm sitting here, laying on the roof, thinking of this freshman that I didn't know a thing about until today. These people stood there spewing venomous words at this beautiful girl, and the only reason was because of some stupid glasses. The worst part of this all, is I didn't do anything. Why do we do this? I believe we all just do it because we believe that's what everyone else wants to hear. I mean, who would really be mean to you, if there friend's weren't around or their family. I know I didn't say anything about her new glasses and I didn't laugh at what the others were saying, but I didn't stick up for her and tell those people what they were doing was wrong. So I decided, on the rooftop of my old suburb home, that I would go against what everyone else believes, that I would go against society.

"Hey fish eyes!" A group of jocks start cackling.

"Hey shit brain!" They all direct their attention towards me and stop their annoying laughing. "Yeah, you guys. Let's look back to 5th grade when this blonde had braces, or when this guy had Harry Potter glasses, did you make fun of them? No, and now look at them, they're gorgeous. You should see her with her glasses off, you'd be treating her like those cheerleaders you follow around everywhere. Maybe you should think before you do something, morons, because the next time something like that comes out of your mouth I will sew them shut." And then I walked away. No words from them, just shocked faces as I walk over to the girl with the glasses and smile.

"What's your name gorgeous?" I smile. She grins at me and gives me a huge hug, "I'm Sophie. Thank you sooo much, you are so nice. I don't know how to repay you." I chuckle, "No need. Seeing those faces stuck in a shocked daze is enough for me. I'm Devin by the way. Devin Chance." She laughs this time. "Isn't that a..no offense. Isn't that a boy name?" I nod, "It's my middle name, I don't like my first name very much." I laugh, "Well I need to go, but I'll see you around." I slightly wave before turning around and walking to my class.

"We have a new student kids, this is Devin Rider." The teacher says so I look up from my desk. A boy with dark, dark, brown hair and almost black eyes is standing there. His arms are covered with a hoodie, but I can see tattoos peaking out from the sleeves and I smile, looking down at my own. He doesn't have a strong build, but you can tell he is strong, but in a sort of thin way. He's not the buff football player you usually see.

"Yo Devin." I turn to look at one of the idiot boys in my class and he's smirking at me, "You're not the only Devin in the class now." I roll my eyes because it was just a moronic statement.

"You're Devin?" Rider says, looking at me with a fascinated expression. I nod, "My middle name, don't like my first name." He starts to say something but the teacher stops him, "Chance will you show him the ropes then?" He asks me. "Of course." I say so Devin comes and sits next to me, "Devin Chance. So what's your first name?" He asks so I begin to laugh. "Wouldn't you like to know."

The day goes slowly but soon enough I'm padding my way up the stairs to my wondrous room. As I get to my usually shut door, I notice that it's open so I push the door open in a hurry to see my mom going through my closet, "We have guests coming over, my new worker and her family. I need you to look nice, where are all your dresses I bought you?" She asks. I plop down on my bed and close my eyes. "The garbage maybe...? I don't know Mom the way back of my closet because I never wear dresses nor should I have to just because you're having a dinner party with one family." I shrug and pull off my shoes, "Maybe check Jesse's room, he seems to have a fascination with my clothes. "HA found one. Put it on, wear your black vans with it. Take out those earrings and put a jacket on over those tattoos." I growl and slam the door in her face as she walks out.

Putting on the dress, I pull out my vans and put them on. I take out my earrings and put a black sweater around me, comfortable yet pretty, is what my mom would say anyways. I walk down stairs again to see my dad on the couch watching some stupid TV show. I give him a kiss on the cheek and then walk into the kitchen. "Do you need any help?" I ask but she just shakes her head and shoos me away. The doorbell rings, "I'll get it!" My dad yells. I hear him shut off the TV and open the front door, greeting the guests. "Ady come here!" He says so I start walking over to the door. But of course, as life is full of sudden coincidences, my has 10 times more, "Well...hey Devin." I chuckle and our parents give us puzzled looks. "She's in a couple of my classes during the day." and they all get an expression of understanding on their faces.

Once we are all seated and have food on our plates, my mom decides to start a conversation. "So, Devin, are those tattoos?" She asks, pointing to his arms. "Oh, dear, I'm so sorry Mrs. Chance, I didn't-" I cut Mrs. Rider off when I take off my sweater. "Want to share stories?" I look at Devin and chuckle. He laughs and takes off his jacket as well. "Oh Mrs. Rider, we have no problem with tattoos in our family." My mother smiles. Mr. Rider and my dad are having a conversation of their owns so they don't hear any of that, lucky men with their selective hearing.

"Adelaide, could you go get some more wine?" Devin smirks. Like a devil smirk that scares me. "Sure." I glare my way into the kitchen to get another wine bottle. Taking the bottle opener, I open it and pour some down my throat before going back in there. Once I'm back at the table, the girls are in there own conversation as well as the boys so Devin and I are just awkwardly sitting across from one another. "I'm done eating, are you?" I ask Devin and he nods. "Want to go get ice cream?" I ask and he grins and nods.

"Daddy...." I smile politely because I interrupted their conversation, "Sorry Mr. Rider. Daddy, could Devin and I please go get some ice cream?" I ask and my dad laughs but gives me a ten. "You are such a child." He shakes his head but he's smiling. "Thank you daddy." I say as I get up and kiss him on the head. "We will be back." I say and wave to everyone else in the room.
