Tapia High School was well known for its excellent academic performance across the island however recently, the school's academic rank has declined.
Erin is a Senior Prefect in the school as well as President of the Teens for Technology Club. The Senior Prefect meeting is held on a Wednesday afternoon in the Prefect's lounge.
It was during one of these meetings that the Prefect Body was reading the academic performance of the top schools across the country. Erin sitting at the table with her skirts folded and her ankles crossed, read aloud the current rank of the school.
"Tapia High School is currently ranked 19th."
"Oh my!" the prefects in the room gasped.
"This is not acceptable, how can we say that we are uplifting the standards when we are ranked last!" exclaimed Erin with the newspaper in her hand shaking.
"Calm down Erin, don't get all worked up over this." said Ashley
"Don't tell me not to get worked up Ashley" said Erin while placing the now wrinkled newspaper on the table.
Ashley raised her hands in surrender and returned to playing Candy Crush on her smartphone.
"You see, this is exactly what I'm trying to say, if the students of the school weren't so caught up with their smartphones, with their snaps or whatever they would have time to focus on their school work not on Rancid!" Erin glanced on Ashley who was still busy playing her game
"Ashley put down the phone!" Erin exclaimed.Ashley jumped at the sound of Erin's voice and in her frightened state dropped her smartphone on the ground. The rest of the prefect body stared at Erin in surprise.
Erin, seeing what she had done, retrieves Ashley's smartphone from the ground, returned it to her and apologized for frightening her."Ladies and gentlemen of the Prefect Body I wish to state that it is the introduction of various social media sites and the advancement in technological devices that have caused the students of this school interest to shift." Said Erin calmly
Kenroy looked at Erin and said " I don't believe so" Erin's eyebrows raised in question
"and I believe that if more than anything these advancement have helped the students." Kenroy continued.
"Is that so Kenroy, are you telling me that that you see students using these gadgets to study?"
"I don't think so " relied Erin.
"I agree with Erin" said Carol "Or rather, I get what she is saying, the students are only concerned about their popularity on the net."
"Thank you for agreeing with me Carol" said Erin while sticking out her tongue at Kenroy.
"What I am proposing here prefects, is to get the Headmistress to sign off on banning these devices during school hours."
"Aren't you taking this too far Erin?" Ashley asked
"Look, it may look that way but it's the only way to get our school back to where it was."
Erin eased out from behind the table and went to stand at the head.
"Now with that said, how many of you are willing to give this a try and form an anti-technology group?"
Carol was the first to raise her hand afterwards several hands went up and soon Erin counted eleven hands.
"Great, all we need to do now is gather a few more persons to join us and we will be on our way." Erin said smiling
"Now that it is settled, meeting is adjourned until next Wednesday." said Alicia
The prefects gathered to go but before they could leave Erin told them to let the anti-technology movement remain secretive, the fewer people know, the better it is.
