After 15 mins, the three of us were all outside the restaurant. Walking in I spotted Jess first sitting on a long table with Oliver on her right. The table was jam-packed. Most of the people on the table were people even I did not know about. I dragged my parents behind me towards the table.
"Mat, you came!" Jess jumped out of her seat. Eyes wide and happy. "Mum! Dad!" She got more excited see them behind me. "Oliver, they are here." She said shaking his elbow. Oliver had a look of surprise. The same expression Jason had who was seated at the very end. Jess hugged Dad and Mum.
"Happy Birthday cupcake!" Dad said. The people on the table made space for mum and dad. I could see that mum's smile was fake but Jess couldn't see that. She was just happy they were there. Oliver was tense. He kept his back straight and was just talking to his friends and Jason. Jason gave me the we-need-to-talk look.
I excused myself by stating I needed fresh air. Jason followed behind me swiftly.
Once we were outside, Jason just lets loose. "How could they do this? To top it off, they did this today!" I got a bit worried seeing that everyone had a great view of us outside. I just took his hand and dragged him to the parking lot.
"Now you can scream," I said calmly. His nose just flared. He walked back and forth with me standing on the spot.
"I had changed my mind and was coming here. Just as I was about to leave they stood in the doorway, preparing to go on another honeymoon." I said with distaste.
"WHAT?" Jason stopped his pacing, hands out in surprise, he was truly speechless.
"They said they were not going to attend. I somehow got dad to agree." I replied. Jason rubbed his eyes and gave a long sigh.
"I am pretty sure they don't have a present for them either," Jason said with his hand on his hip.
"I think them being here is above anything anyone expected, to be honest."
"Did you see Oliver, he knew something was on when they weren't here after 30 mins."
"He is a smart lad. I think he knows that I dragged their asses here."
"Yeah. Just don't tell Jess that." Jason had given up on them. I guess anyone would if they were in his place.
"Of course not. It would break her." Put my hand on Jason's shoulder and gave it a little squeeze for encouragement. "Let's go back, Oliver would be getting worried about his big brother." I gave a small smile.
The pain in my stomach subsided for a moment and I was a bit relieved. We went back in and walked to the table. Sitting down, everyone dug into the food.
Dad and Mum were still there which I was grateful for because Jess was a sight to see. I had never seen her laugh and be this happy in ages. Oliver was the polar opposite. I saw mum giving dad eye signals to leave, but dad was too busy chatting with Jess. He was really pushing it when it came to Mum. But I couldn't care less, I was just going with the flow and hoping everything went smoothly after this.
After everyone finished their starters, Mum couldn't hold the urge to finally speak.
"Honey, I think we should leave and let the kids have fun." Eyes glaring at dad but her voice had a sickly sweetness to it.
"ahh, Mum. But we were just beginning to have fun." Oliver spoke. To everyone, he would seem to have said it the sweetest way possible but me and Jason knew better. Oliver looked my way, I just shook my head, staring back at his hazel eyes; trying to tell him to stop before things got out of hand. Sometimes he could be an absolute idiot. He got my message but before he could say something more Jessica cut him.
