It was a long plane flight and all I could think about was my wife and kids. When we got there we were briefs and sent out to gear up.
I was gearing up and as I put in my helmet there was a loud boom! We had been bombed by Iraqi soldiers, we were told to get to cover since we had our gear on. There was gunfire everywhere and as I looked to my left I see a grenade drop in front of the soldier next to me he jumps on top of it and tells us to run, as I'm running I hear the grenade go off and I turn around to see him in bloody, gory bits.
It was the worst thing I had ever seen but he had the courage and commitment to his county's freedom to sacrifice himself to save his fellow American. As I'm sitting behind the seemingly useless concrete barrier in shock I realize something I could have never done anything near what that man just did, and I admire him for that. Then it hit me, not a thought, but a hot lead bullet.
