"How do you feel?"
"Fine."
"You should see results in a few hours, but you most likely won't notice any changes until then. There are a few very mild side effects, but they're nothing to worry about. You know when to come back to take the second pill. You may leave."
"Okay, thank-you."
"No, thank you, Maye Weathers."
~
Maye left the building feeling slightly dazed, but otherwise, fine. The drug had been administered by a man, with features so sharp that they could cut diamonds. Maybe that was a side effect. Before giving her the tablet, the man had told her that all overseers had taken both themselves, so it was clearly safe. But that didn't worry her.
Maye Weathers was extremely thrilled about the effects of the pill, and wondered what it could do for her dream; her dream of becoming a world-renowned entrepreneur. Sure, she didn't know what she was going to invent to get there, but it was her dream nonetheless. Maybe this pill would give her the brainpower to figure that out.The overseer had told her that it was a 'cognitive function enhancing drug' and had assured her that it was 'completely legal' and 'thoroughly tested'. She hoped the organisation (as they had called themselves, refusing to give a company name) wasn't lying, because in her current situation, this drug not working wasn't an option.
The early morning Auckland gale whipped her short brown hair into a nest of chaos. Her hazel brown eyes scanned the street for any signs of danger. This was normal for her, as attacks on anyone walking alone were a daily occurrence in these parts. Thankfully, her small build allowed her to move quickly, so if she was advanced upon, Maye could get out of the situation relatively easily. She scuffed her feet along the dirty, cracked footpath, whilst picking at her nails.
Maye headed back to her one room apartment to get ready for her job. Ugh, work. Maye loathed what she did for a job, but it was necessary to get money to stay alive. Office jobs were boring for everyone except those who actually wanted to sit at a desk all day filing papers and writing 'important' emails. She was absolutely not one of those people. Maye wanted to be out there, pursuing her slightly farfetched, but still semi-possible aspiration.
She 'suited up', so to speak, at least, her version of 'suiting up'. That was her way of saying 'finding the clothes that were the least dirty'. It was that bad. She picked out a reasonably clean, black t-shirt and jeans, and donned her one and only piece of jewellery: her mother's sapphire pendant, given to Maye before her parents' untimely deaths.
She sighed.
"Time to go I guess"

On her way to her personal hell, something strange happened; she lost her way. This was strange because she normally had an impeccable sense of direction and could go on auto-pilot without ever getting lost. Maye consulted a map and realised that she was two streets down from where she needed to be. Pocketing the map for safe-keeping, Maye continued on her way, deciding to ignore the anomaly, whilst still keeping it in the back of her mind.Maye slumped into James and Johns Ltd, a most colourfully decorated establishment, (which she found ironic, as it was the most boring place on earth) only to find that a person she didn't know was sitting at her desk.
"Um, who are you?"
"Maye, it's me, Tim." When Maye responded with a blank expression, he continued, saying "Your co-worker."
"Right, right, yeah I knew that. But, uh what're you doing at my desk?"
"This is my desk... "
"Oh. Um... where's mine?"
"It's over there." He pointed to a cubicle a few metres away.
"Thanks..." She awkwardly shuffled to where Tim had pointed. Why couldn't she remember this man? Or where her desk was? This day was becoming weirder by the minute. But Maye could reflect on this later, because right now, she had work to do.

Later, Maye met with her work best friend, Anna Lotriser, and went out for lunch. They dined at a nearby McDonald's, because they were both holding out for their next paycheck. Maye was introduced to Anna's childhood friend, Blake Rumsby, who had recently come to town for a work opportunity. Blake looked familiar, which she could add to the list of weird things that had happened today, because Maye was positive that she had never met him in her life. Like all the others, she pushed that aside.
