Today was testing day. Every month everyone in our society, no matter how old or how young, was tested. No one knew why, but every time we were tested, five people were taken away the next day. It didn't matter how old or young they were, they could be taken. Some people were never seen again after we they were taken, and others, you saw the next day working a new job.

I stepped forward through the crowd, hoping to find my friend Tucker through the crowds, but I couldn't find his blonde head anywhere. I kept searching through the crowds, hoping to find him until I heard his voice behind me,

"Ash! Ash! Hey, I'm over here, right behind you. Come on, we've got to get to testing."

I was relieved we had found each other, because if we hadn't and Tucker was taken, or I was taken, I would have never forgiven myself for not saying goodbye.

Tucker ran through the crowd, dodging through every person in hopes of getting in line first so we would have a day free of chores once we finished. As we were running, I thought about my memories with tucker.

Our parents had both been taken one month, and they weren't seen again, so Tucker and I both had to go the orphanage in our society. There were many children there, as everyone was taken at some point in their life, but it was unusual for both parents of two children to be taken in one month, so Tucker and I became fast friends, adapting to a life with no parents together. Ever since then, we have been inseparable, running through our compound together, laughing until our tummies hurt and sometimes just sitting quietly, thoughts churning in our heads.

I snapped back into reality as a woman in a white coat grabbed me and motioned for me to step forwards into the testing room. I embraced Tucker and held on tight, wondering if this would be the last time I ever saw him.

"Ok Ash, you can let go now, we'll see each other again, I promise, and if we don't, don't let it stop you from continuing." Tucker advised as another woman in a lab coat tugged at him, "Good luck Ash, see you soon."

"See you soon Tucker, and good luck" I yelled after him.
