It's been a couple of weeks since James got better. Izzy and James had played for hours, and they managed to convince me to join them. I was lying on my bed with Izzy and James, asleep, leaning on my arms. Stroking James hair was relaxing, and I was so calm, so happy. I hadn't felt this good in a long time. Then I heard it. The loudest bang I have ever heard. (And I'd heard a lot in my time here.) I sat up, waking James and Izzy in the process, but there was only a couple of seconds before the door flew off its hinges. Izzy screamed, and James fell off the bed with a yell.
"Under the bed! Under the bed!" I yelled at them. They scrambled under while I slowly went to the door to see what was going on. There was smoke everywhere, and a little bit of fire here and there (I could see the through the smoke) so I knew this wasn't a drill.
"Zoë? What's going on?" I heard from under the bed.
"I don't know. Stay under the bed." I told James firmly. As quietly as I could, I crept out of the room, glancing at the crumpled piece of metal that used to be our cell door. I could hear the faint noises of the guards yelling.
"Is that the only one?"
"Where is he?"
Then it clicked. A bomb. Someone had set off a bomb. An escape. But how? We aren't allowed out of our rooms, so how would they have found the materials? I was snapped out of my thoughts by another loud bang. A gunshot. I flattened myself against the wall and held my breath. My mind was racing and I heard a scream.
"Izzy!" I ran back toward our cell, following Izzy's scream. I leap over the door to find her and James still half under the bed. James was lying in Izzy's lap, cradling his arm. Izzy was crying.
"Izzy! James! What happened?" I dropped to my knees beside them.
"I don't really know. We stayed under the bed, like you told us to, but the a random bullet came flying in and hit James's arm." She was still sobbing. Why? I thought Why poor little James all the time? I took James into my arms and he opened his eyes.
"Izzy?" He said.
"No, James. It's me, Zoë."
"Mmmhhh." He curled into my stomach. "Izzy," I said alarmed "Why is he so sleepy?" My voice began to sound desperate and hysterical. Then it clicked. There had been some sort of sleeping drug on it. Maybe even........ Oh no. I've heard of this before, from the guards. It makes you really sleepy, but if you do fall asleep, you never wake up.
"James!" He only murmured. "James, please! You can't sleep! Please! Stay awake!"
"Zoë! Zoë! The guards are coming! What are we going to do?" Izzy looked like she was going to faint.
"Izzy, Izzy! Stay with me, okay?"
"Okay, what are we going to do?"
I could hear the guards foot steps in the walkway next to ours. My natural instincts kicked in.
