It was around midnight when the bus pulled through a barbed wire gate and into an empty lot. We had stopped often to pick up other students, but this seemed like the destination. As soon as I caught a glance, I knew that either this was the worst boarding school on the planet, or there was more going on here than we were told.
The vehicle was filled to the brim with children, none paying attention. The kid next to me was asleep, as were many others. I seemed to be the only one looking out a window at what was to come.
A man who called himself Jack had us file off the bus and into a yawning doorway. We stepped into a large, hangar type room.
"Boys, over here," he said, leading the group of guys over to a second doorway. They all disappeared, one by one, into the room beyond. "Girls, follow me."
I fell into line at the very back. A girl who looked about my age and seemed as paranoid as I was walked a few people ahead of me. I saw her step to the side, stand still for a moment, and fall into step right beside me.
"Am I the only one here who's sane? There has to be something wrong with this place."
"You're not alone," I replied. "Something about it gives me the creeps. I thought boarding school was supposed to be nice, at least. Not juvenile hall."
"Hey, single file, please," Jack snapped behind us. The girl moved to the spot behind me in line. We walked into an area with medical examination tables and tools. "We need to get a reading on your physical and mental health before we show you to your dorms," Jack told us. "Line up behind a table."
I uneasily moved towards the counter closest to me. The girl I had talked to followed. The first kid to hop up on the table looked about 6 years old. She swung her legs nervously, like she was at a doctor's appointment.
"Why do you think they need to know our health?" I whispered over my shoulder.
She replied, "I don't know, but I bet it's not for school." We stood in silence for a minute. "My name's Samantha, by the way."
"Harmony." I nodded to her in greeting.
As the line grew shorter, I watched girls go to two different doors. One, I'm guessing, led to the safety of the dorms, and the other... Well, who knows where.
When it got to be my turn, I sat on the metal counter and chewed on my lip. "Okay, sweetie," the nurse said in a soothing voice. "I'm just going to swab your throat and take some blood." She smiled at me.
Not creepy at all.
The nurse did what she said and then gave me a couple shots.
"What's that for?" I asked.
"Oh, it's just to be safe."
"What, to make sure we don't have rabies or something?" She looked at me uneasily. "I mean, what kind of boarding school is this? Why are you doing this to us? What could you possibly need to check?" At this point I was practically yelling. The room was silent and everyone looked over at me. A moment later a terrible scream echoed through one doorway. It was a young girl's.
My eyes grew wide. The nurse snapped her fingers. "Jack, take her away." I started to kick and punch as he took my arm and started to lead me to a third door, one nobody had gone through.
"Wait!" I screamed. "What was that?! What did you do to her?!" I bit down on his arm and he let me go. I made a run for it, but he grabbed me again. This time, he stabbed me with a syringe in the neck. My vision clouded and I started to feel hazy. I looked up at Samantha, hoping her fate wouldn't match that of the little girl's. Everyone in the room stared as I was dragged across the floor, into the next room.
A/N
Second and last chapter of flashback, at least for Harmony. This happened right before what occurs in chapter 1.
So, I'd really love some votes or comments on this story, even if it's just an emoji.
I know this book is kind of boring right now, but trust me. It will get better.
Another chapter will be coming soon, so get ready!
