Chapter Ten

Part 2

“So what was the purpose of the suicides between Romeo….” Mrs. Longwell’s voice is distanced itself from my thoughts as my brain pushes her away.

“It is crazy what we do for the people we care about.”

“But it is crazier when the person we love doesn’t even realize how much they mean to the other.”

His words has replayed in my head ever since he left, making it almost impossible to sleep, which is exactly why I only got two hours of sleep the night before.

I have not been able to focus on anything, none of my school work, none of my conversations, nothing.

I didn’t sleep with any other girls after that night and I tried to get you to know that I was different.

Had he been telling the truth? Or was he just trying to trick me into falling back into his grasp?

“Cameron,” Mrs. Longwell says and by the sound of her voice, this wasn’t the first time she had called it. “Are you alright Dear? You look a little distant.” She asks, her voice concerned.

The whole class has turned to watch me, their eyes on mine as I open and close my mouth, looking for a response, any response to give her, but I am having trouble getting the words out.

One pair of eyes in particular have fallen on me and I can feel their icy watch, watching my movements, my emotion, everything.

“I’m fine.” I choke out and she raises a eyebrow at me.

“Can you tell me the purpose of Romeo and Juliet’s suicide?” she asks me.

I hear a chuckle and I look over and find the blue eyes not trained on me anymore, but instead they are focused on a girl that looks familiar. When she turns her face sideways to look into his eyes, I find out who she is in no time.

She was the girl that climbed into Xander’s lap at the party that night.

“Mr. Belk, can you tell me the purpose of Romeo and Juliet’s suicide? Since you want to giggle and talk so much in my class, how about you put that mouth to good use?”

I smile and watch as he turns to me and I look away quickly, not letting the smile from Mrs. Longwell’s words leave my lips though.

“It was true love.” He says. “The fact that they couldn’t live without each other was too strong for either of them to bare it, so they went together.”

I look up and find him looking at me, our eyes meet for a moment but my eyes move down to the hand rubbing his leg and I meet his eyes again, glaring. He looks down but when his eyes look back to me, I am already looking away.

∞

I heard from Cassandra that they are dating.

What about Cameron? I thought that they were dating.

No, I heard from Tanner that they broke up yesterday, that is why she slapped him. He probably cheated on her with Missy.

This is one of the many conversations I have heard today. So I am guessing Xander and I had a relationship that I didn’t know about, and that Missy is the girl that was rubbing his leg and the one from the party.

I shake my head as one of the conversations walk by me at my locker before slamming it shut and finding Marcus waiting on the other side.

“I am guessing you are about to come and yell at me for the rumors you have heard?” I ask him and he smiles slightly.

“You bet.” He says, the small smile fading slowly.

“Well, before you do, just know that that is all they are. They are just rumors.” I tell him and he nods.

“I am gathering that by all the different versions that are being told.”

“Well you should have gathered that before you jumped to conclusions and slept with my bestfriend.” The words tumble out before I can stop them.

He flinches slightly before nodding slowly.

“I know.” He says, his voice hoarse and my swallow hard.

We are silent for a second and the hallway clears from the students as they go to lunch and I sigh. Looking down at my shoes.

“Cameron… I am so sorry.. I know that means nothing to you but I really am…” he tells me softly, his voice breaking slightly and when I look up he looks away and to the wall across the hall.

“Want to walk me to Mrs. Longwells?” I ask him and he looks to me, a smile forming on his sharp features.

He and his brother looked a lot alike, they both had sharp cheekbones and defined features, broad shoulders and muscular arms and chests, dark hair, the only things that were different was their features, eye color, and age.

“Sure.” He smiles and nods before turning on his heels and waiting for me to walk beside him before he begins walking down the hallway and to Mrs. Longwells room.

We walk in silence until we have reached the classroom where I stand in the doorway and look at him.

“So I guess I will see you around?” I ask him, for some reason a flare of hope rushes through me before I can stop it.

Xander’s face flashes through my mind but then the image of her hand on his leg and the sound of the murmuring girls as they walk past me with their gossip runs through my head and I don’t feel as guilty.

“Yea, I was actually wondering if you would maybe go to dinner with me….? I was just hoping to maybe talk and work things…” he says, his words drifting off. “I mean if you don’t want to I totally understand, I really don’t deserve for you to go out with me again anyways.”

The image of her on his lap and her hand on his leg again pops into my mind while I pause to answer and before I know what I am doing I am nodding.

“That sounds good.” I tell him and he smiles.

“Alright then. Are you good tonight? Around seven?” he asks me and I nod before he smiles, tell me he will see me later and begins walking to the lunch room. I turn around slowly and walk into the classroom.

I feel eyes on me and I look up and find Xander himself glaring at me before he stands, knocking his chair onto the ground as it slides across the tile.

He glares at me a moment longer before storming out of the room, the air of his movements caressing my skin as he passes.

I turn around and find him pausing in the doorway and he stops.

“Have fun, but when you get your heartbroken again, don’t expect me to do something.”

And with that he leaves the classroom and disappears around the corner, leaving me with a surprisingly empty feeling.
