Prompt: a giant hourglass that has existed for as long as anyone can remember is scheduled to run out in the next 24 hours.

The sound resounded throughout the room, and a soft humming started up. Whispers quickly spread through the crowd.
The top opened with several clicks, and a bright glow came from inside. The crowd couldn't see what was within, but from my vantage point...

(I'm thinking something like The City of Ember. Some kind of city to protect people until the world outside is safe to live in.
What's inside? A message? A control panel? Someone in cryosleep?)
