"Jamie" the head worker Mary called from downstairs. "Can you come down here please?"
I jumped down from the window seat and ran out of my room and down the stairs. As I passed the front door on the way to the office I noticed one of the older boys walk in, a bottle of beer badly hidden behind his back.
"You shouldn't have that" I said.
"You going to snitch on me?" He asked with his eyebrows raised.
I knew better than to snitch on him. I also knew for a fact that he was part of a gang that was well known across the area, that was down to the fact that they carried knives and had been arrested multiple times for breaking into shops and houses.
You see, I lived in one of the most ruff areas of London. The orphanage was full of children and teenagers, and although Mary did her best to guide them down the right path, the gangs and other criminal activities were appealing to lots of them.
As I walked up to Mary's office door I heard a police siren in the distance, that was the fifth one that day.
"Mary?" I knocked on the door.
"Come in sweetheart" she said and I opened the door.
Mary motioned for me to sit in the seat opposite from her at the desk.
"Now, I know this is a bit last minute, but I knew if I told you any earlier then you'd be bouncing off the walls from excitement and I wouldn't be able to deal with that" Mary chuckled.
I looked up at her expectantly and she smiled.
"You're getting adopted Jamie" Mary said and my mouth dropped open.
"Me? Really?" I squealed and jumped up and down in my seat. "You're not just lying to me are you?" I said starting to get disappointed
"No of course I'm not, they're going to be over in about ten minutes so go and get ready, they'll want to interview you first obviously, but you're a lovely girl Jamie, I am positive they'll want to take you home" she reassured, making me a bit less worried.
"Thank you Mary" I got out of my seat and skipped around the desk to hug her. "I'm so happy, I can't even explain it"
"I'm sure you are, now go on" she said and I smiled one last time at her before running upstairs.
Once I got back into my room I headed straight over to my wardrobe and opened the doors. I should make some effort shouldn't I? I mean dirty jeans and an old top weren't the nicest clothes I had, but they were the clothes I was wearing at that moment.
I picked out a pair of leggings with a white top and a black leather jacket. I looked in the mirror and nodded. It would do.
I paced around my room while I waited for the people to arrive. I couldn't believe it, no one had ever shown any interest in me before, I had just learnt to get on with life and make the most of what I had. But now that had all changed. Finally...
"Jamie? Are you coming downstairs?" I heard Mary laugh from downstairs.
They were here. It's okay Jamie just stay calm, don't freak out. I tried calming myself, I took in a deep breath and walked anxiously down the stairs.
The hallway seemed like the longest in the world at that moment. But I felt my nerves disappear as I opened the door and was met with five warm smiles.
