“Are you drunk?” Cassadee asked Jack and I. Jack popped her upside the head and her hair flew over her face. she slapped Jack and he fell to the ground while I busted out in a misfit of giggles. “Don’t touch my hair again Barakat.” She walked off in her heels, dragging me by the arm while my butt scooted across the pavement.  “Honestly, this is the last time I bring you to a party. You’re frigging shit faced drunk!” I threw my head back in laughter.

“Cass, when we get to home can we pleeeeeassseee watch Turtle Ninja Teenage Mutants?” I slur.

“You mean Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?” she corrects.

“Nahhh. I’m pretty sure it’s Turtle Ninja Teenage Mutants.”

“That’s right!” Alex cheered from the back. “Lesbo make out!”

Alex POV

I still laugh at that memory. It popped in my mind when the show itself came on. I chuckle at this and suddenly, my pain came back. Was Maria really in trouble? Nah, probs a photo edit. I mean, she did cause Cassadee to loose all her friends in high school and we became the laughing stalk of the school. While she became Ms. Popular. Bullshit. What made this even worse was we’re heading back home to Baltimore, and we would run into Maria. I hope to never see her again.

“Promise me we’ll be best friends forever. All of us.” Maria looked at us all.

“Promise.” We all hugged a celebrated with the usual. Locking Jack and Rian in a closet, locking it, and eating pizza while watching movies. The banging at the door got annoying so I went to open it and Jack fell forward, his lips crashing against mine. I was hit in a gay moment. I quickly shoved Jack away and wiped my lips.

“Gross man! What was that!” he smirked at me and put his hands on his hips.

“Don’t act like you didn’t enjoy it.” Maria busted out laughing. Cassadee was chocking.

“I got photos!” she yelled.

Maybe if I never met Maria, this would’ve ever happened. I always knew her parents were fucked up. I just didn’t think she was fucked up too. I mean, we’ve been best friends forever. Basically since I moved here.

Man. Dragging myself to safety isn’t as easy as it sounds. Safety. It reminds me of Alex and our first time.

Growing up across the street from Alex Gaskarth has had its perks. When I was 8 years old and boys in my class picked on you, he walked me home from school to make sure no one would mess with me. When I was 11 and I went to my first boy-girl party, we got paired together for 7 minutes in heaven since he was my best friend. He was my first kiss, my first everything. Tonight, he’d also be the first person I slept with.

Alex and I had very similar ideas on dating and relationships. We went on dates, with other people and occasionally with each other, but I didn’t feel like high school was the time to get serious with anyone. The most serious relationship we had was with each other. We were completely on the same wavelength, best friends and soul mates in a way that worked for us. That’s why I wasn’t really phased when Alex asked me a personal question as I sat out on his back porch, drinking beers and soaking up the last of the summer.

“Maria, are you still a virgin?”

I choked a bit, then regained composure. “Real subtle, Gaskarth.”

“Seriously! I mean, I still am…”

“No fucking way,” I replied. “I call bullshit.”

“I’m 150% serious.”
