Students filled the halls, talking outside classrooms, comparing schedules, putting their belongings in their lockers. It was the first day of the 2010-2011 school year. Some students were excited, as for others, not so much. But why wouldn't they be? There were so many things to look forward to: catching up with friends, having yet another undefeated boys' basketball season, enjoying free period, almost dying while running a mile a day in gym, dealing with bitchy teachers, wanting to kill yourself, having competitions to see whose hot dogs bounce the highest. What wasn't to anxiously await?
Areum held her books close to her chest as she walked down the halls of Shinil High School for the very first time. Her stomach was churning, but in a good way. Having transferred from a school with no more than forty kids in a graduating class, to this relatively large school, was frightening, but Areum was ready to make some new friends. She was a bit nervous, especially since she was entering as a senior, but nothing could wipe the smile off her face.
Minji was feeling even more positive than Areum. She had put on her uniform and impeccably coordinated accessories, and headed out the door like the champ she was. What would the school musicals be this year? What would her teachers be like? Minji was one of the few people to be excited for the start of school; she couldn't wait for the auditions for the fall play. This was Minji's school, the one place she could really shine. Nothing could bring her down today, except maybe the frigid slushie Namjoon, the bully, had just splashed in her face, ruining her perfectly pressed uniform. She released an obnoxiously loud sigh, and straightened her skirt with her hands, beads of red liquid dripping onto the patterned tile floor as she made her way to homeroom.
Suji, the most popular girl in all the school, passed Minji and laughed, her minion, Eunbi, following behind her. She spotted an awfully pretty girl looking at the schedule neatly plastered onto the inside of her locker door. She must've been new.
"You," Suji pointed at her.
"Hello," the girl looked at the floor, pushing a strand of hair behind her ear, "My name is Areum. Nice meeting you."
Suji spoke again, "Sorry to startle you. You're just, like, really pretty. Are you new?"
Before Areum could utter a word, Suji's sidekick, Eunbi, interjected, "You can sit with us at lunch today."
Suji shot Eunbi a glare of disapproval. The girls said nothing more, and Areum made her way to where her homeroom was said to be.
As Suji strutted down the halls like she owned the place, Eunbi on her tail, she spotted Yoongi, the most popular boy in school, star and captain of the basketball team, and her longtime crush, with his best friend Seokjin.
Eunbi shifted her lips towards Suji's ear. "You can do this," she whispered.
Suji swatted her away and rolled her eyes, "I know."
Eunbi was a little bit hurt, but didn't say anything; she was used to this.
"Hey!" Suji twirled her hair and walked with a slight spring in her step. "How was your summer, Yoongi?"
"Hm?" Yoongi turned around, "Oh, hey."
"You gonna answer my question, or...?"
"Um, yeah, sorry. My summer was fine, thanks. How was yours?"
Suji spoke as enthusiastically as one could, reaching into her hot pink handbag for her phone, "It was fantastic!" She swiped through her camera roll, showing Yoongi pictures of her summer. "I went to New York City for modeling training, spent time by the pool at my summer house, bought all kinds of ne-"
"I-I'm sorry, Suji, but I don't really have time to catch up right now. I can't afford to be late to class on the first day. See you 'round."
Seokjin winked at Suji and Eunbi before spinning around to catch up with his friend, who was already halfway down the halls.
"Hey," he whisper shouted after Yoongi, "Wait up! I can't believe you just did that!"
"Did what?"
"You just blew off the hottest girl in the whole school!"
Yoongi shrugged, "And? What's your point?"
"Damn," Seokjin chuckled under his breath, and brushed off the topic. He wished he could be like that.
Yoongi was the type to give no fucks about anything. Ever. To be quite honest, he really couldn't care less about Suji, or her social or economic status. He was used to being fawned over, and he was sick of it; he wanted something new, someone who wouldn't grovel at his feet. It was at this moment, he heard a soft, gentle voice, coming from behind.
"Excuse me?"
He turned around, and so did Seokjin, "Yeah?"
It was a girl, and she was beautiful. She had long, voluminous brown hair, right down to the shoulders. Her nose was adorably narrow, and her skin looked soft to the touch. Seokjin lightly slapped Yoongi's thigh. This was their unique eye-candy signal.
"Do you happen to know where Mr Choi's homeroom is? My schedule says Room 121, but there's no one in there, and I-"
"Don't worry," Seokjin interrupted, stepping forward, and slightly pushing Yoongi back, "I'm in that homeroom too! I'll take you there."
"Thanks," the girl nervously smiled.
"Oh, and I'm Seokjin. That's Yoongi," he pointed to his friend.
"I'm Areum, Lee Areum," the girl introduced herself.
"Are you new?" Seokjin asked.
She nodded.
"Well, Areum," Seokjin spoke, stressing the girl's name, " I'll take you to our homeroom. Want me to show you around after school?"
Areum blushed and smiled, "Um, I don't think I can make it. I need to get home to unpack from moving. Thanks for offering to help me out, though. I'll surely you take you up and that later."
"Okay, no problem." Seokjin waved goodbye to his friend, "Bye, Yoongi. See you later!"
"Bye!" Areum waved to him as well.
Yoongi watched them walk off to their homeroom, not caring when and how he'd get to his. The two of them would laugh every so often, and Seokjin went as far to put his hand on Areum's shoulder for a moment. He didn't feel jealous, necessarily; he just wanted to be Seokjin. This wasn't supposed to happen. Yoongi was never jealous of anyone. They were only jealous of him. He shook his head and ran a hand through his hair before deciding to turn around, leave them to their business, and start minding his own.
