I grew up in a time where many things were forbidden. Women didn’t have rights, people couldn’t talk to certain people, and you were considered scum because of the color of your skin. Being prejudice was common amongst the people. Hatred was what they felt. Women and children brutally beaten because they were looked on as in-superior to others. They were forced to work the fields, wash our clothes, and do as we said with no pay. They were treated cruelly, like wild animals. They were taken from their home and sold to strange people. Families were torn apart because of our selfishness and prejudice.

The worst of all was to fall in love with someone of a different race and color. God forbid if you fell in love with a black woman or man. Everyone would condemn you to hell if you did. It was an unholy union to people. And yet I fell into this “unholy union” with a man named Samuel. I knew the consequences for loving a man of a different race, but I didn’t care. Love will make you do stupid and silly things. Things you may regret or things that will kill you or maybe even both.
