The Heartless

Chapter 2

 I'm speechless. How did that "thing" get into my hideaway? And what is it? It looked like a gremlin with clothes and moose antlers. It had a ragged brown vest, with a shirt that I think was once yellow, and brown pants that were full of holes.

"I was wondering how long it would take you to get here, Alex." The creature moaned "fourteen long years, I've been waiting for someone like you to show your face in this place."

After taking a few moments to recover from the shock I say timidly"What do you mean, 'someone like me'?"

"A normal human. One without the gene." it answered. I stare at him in shock.

The creature says in his high-pitched voice "I am Muskie, the first of the six full humans left in this world." We are the only people who have not been marked by society."

"What does this have to do with me?" I ask.

"You are the fifth, and now there is only one more we must find, and we need you help us."

"So you're saying that I'm one of the only people left in the world who is, like,

a normal human?" I ask in order to understand what this madman is saying.

"Yes," Muskie starts, "I was told that there were two here, in The Zone and now I have found one!" he exclaims as he starts to dance around the room. "But, I was not expecting the one at the palace to be you."

"Well, who is the other one then?" I inquire. Just then, a loud bang is heard from not far outside.

"You shall meet her soon enough, but as soon as you do, come to the border. I'll meet you there." he says, stumbling on his words "Good bye Alex. Until next time."And with that he promptly jumped out the broken window and ran off cackling like a madman. As I left, thinking about everything that Muskie had just told me, a soldier walked up to me and hurriedly asked "Have you seen a short man with moose antlers around here?'

Not knowing what I was doing and quite surprised with the concern of the soldier, I quickly answered no and walked away.

A few minutes after I start for home,, I pass the school. Hurriedly I walk past, hoping that there's no one there. After another half-hour, I walk into the center of town. When I get to the fountain plaza, I stop to admire the statue there. It was a statue of Madame Roslyn, the person who runs the government. Well, government is really too fancy of a word. The only 'government' we have are the soldiers who make sure no one breaks any laws, and the officials the Madame posted in each of the societies. When I get home, my mom tells me that Abbey was looking for me earlier. She then tells me that "She's your only friend, you should go see what she wanted." I tell her that I would go later and that I desperately want to rest.

When I get to my room I lay down, still stunned about what I had heard earlier. When will I meet the girl he was talking about?

I eventually decided to go Abbey's house and see what she wanted earlier.When I arrive, I'm stunned to see that instead of just Abbey, there was another girl with her, and her clothes were the strangest I've ever seen.

"So you must be Alex," The girl starts "I'm Lizie. I've been looking for you." she turns to Abbey, " Do you mind if we talk in private, Abbey?"

"Of course not!" Abbey says as she winks at me, and leaves the room.

"Okay, let's cut the crap. I know you've met with Muskie, so let's get going, okay? Okay, good let's go." She says

"Wait," I start as I get my bearings,"Where are we going?"

She stares at me like I'm the dumbest person on earth, "Where do you think, idiot? Mars? Muskie's house of course."

"What do you mean? I wasn't told about going anywhere."

"Well I'm telling you, we need to leave here now, or else the Madame will come for us."She responds. As if on cue,a knock comes from the front door. As Lizie looks out the window, Abbey's mom opens the door. Like Lizie was saying, a soldier is standing in the doorway. Before I could even blink, I was pulled off my feet. I, hear a gunshot and the next thing I know I'm being thrown out a window and dragged down the road.
