Thunder

As I lay in bed,

I see the flash of lightning through my eyelids.

I open them with a start,

just to find a crash of thunder echoing through my home.

I could feel the startled feeling of adrenaline rush through me,

A lump in my throat,

A sick feel in my stomach.

As I ponder the way thunder works,

I hear more crashes from outside my house

This time though, its not only thunder,

It is my thoughts pounding against my skull.

2:00 a.m. and wide awake,

waiting for more bangs against my head.

All I hear are the fans by bed,

The white noise that I must tune out

before I drift to sleep.
